Grunge was just a word Jonathan Poneman made up to have a link between the various Seattle based bands that were on ihis label in the late '80s. In other words Pearl Jam and STP arent grunge bands as such. Sub-genres, when the definition is so limited, are just there as marketing devices to sell product.

Out of all of those Sub Pop bands the most influencial by far was Nirvana. You don't here people raving about Tad or Mark Lanegan.

Forgive my ignorance but i'm not familiar with their work. Recomend an album of theirs and ill get back to you when i've heard it.
