First of all, this needs to be moved to the alternative forum, as Beck is not indie. I haven't heard One Foot In the Grave or Stereopathic Soul Manure, but here's how I rank the rest.

1 - Sea Change
2 - Mutations
3 - Midnite Vultures
4 - Guero
5 - Odelay
6 - Mellow Gold

EDIT: There you go; they're numbered now.

I hear you regarding the switch- my fault. Is Sea Change #1 or #5?

oh god how i love beck.

1. midnite vultures (people seem to love this or hate it.. i'm in the former, i love, love, love this album).
2. mutations
3. odelay
4. sea change
5. guero
6. mellow gold
7. one foot in the grave
8. stereopathic soul manure

they are ALL good albums even though i had to rank them... i have been consistently playing guero since it came out. i'm very pleased with its set of strong songs.

he is GREAT live, i saw him recently with le tigre and this random band tv sheriff(s?). it's not really apparent that he is a very talented singer on his albums since listerners tend to focus on his lyrics.. but gosh, when he performs acoustic stuff his voice travels really well and hes just very emotive, especially with stuff from mutations and sea change. and his acoustic version of "debra" (from midnite vultures) is ace.

Beck is one of my favorite artists, and I've been a fan of his for years.
So here are the albums ranked by my level of enjoyment. If that makes any sense.

1.Midnite Vultures
2.Odelay
3.Mellow Gold
4.Mutations
5.Guero
6.Sea Change
and I haven't heard his early recordings.

What I don't understand in this thread...Mellow Gold and Odelay are such similar albums. At least, more similar than any other two albums from Beck's catalogue. I can't imagine how you could love one and hate the other...

It's not that I don't like the sound on Mellow Gold, but it's nowhere near as solid as some of Beck's other efforts. He didn't really hit his stride until Odelay.

I'm new to posting in these parts, and I just said that Wilco's AGIB is my fav of theirs, so you guys are all gonna think I'm a noobie when I say GUERO is my favorite Beck album, but I swear I've listened to him, and Wilco for years. I was this close to giving up on Beck, having not really dug much since Mutations, but GUERO was the album I wanted him to make- finally hitting the right mix between his folk/country/rootsy leanings and the pomo stuff. Like a Tom Waits album with breakbeats. I dig it.

Take it easy...
...but take it

Though I listen to Midnight Vultures the most, that is just because Sea Change requires me to a bit more of a specific mood to fire it on.

1. Sea Change
2. Midnight Vultures
3. Mutations
4. Guero
5. Mellow Gold
6. Odelay
7. Stereopathic Soul Manure
8. One Foot In The Grave

Mellow Gold is such a "rough" album, though... it's kind of like the album that had the potential but didn't fulfill it. Odelay is a much more cohesive album, and in my opinion, better produced. Smiler

I own three Beck albums: Midnight Vultures, Sea Change, and Guero. And I'd probably rate them in that exact order.

My favorite Beck song would be "Lost Cause" off Sea Change.
