The album, Anywhere I Lay My Head, comes out May 20th. 10 Tom Waits covers, including this one, and one original. Dave Sitek is producing. She sounds pretty much exactly like I expected. It's not bad but I'm not sure she adds anything to the tune. Thoughts?
In the celebrity world she's basically the most gorgeous female actor out there, and how many celebrities listen to Tom Waits, let alone have the balls to cover him. If you know any women who are more attractive then her with a good taste in music, then I'm moving... Montreal is it?

I think calling Scarlett Johansson the most beautiful actress is a bit of a stretch. I'm not saying she's ugly. She's definitely attractive. But, I can think of hotter celebrities.

I think she bravely set herself up for a difficult road with this album.
The general public who sees her movies and the mainstream entertainment press (Extra, ET and E! or whatever) will not like this album because it is not a normal 23 year-old actress dance-pop album. They are not into Tom Waits or TV on the Radio and will think it is "weird" and that her singing is bad because there is not auto-tune or pitch correction.
Then, the Stereogums and Pitchforks of the world are too protective of the source material to let an outsider (sexy millionaire actresses) try to play dress-up as an alt/indie girl. They embraced Zoey Deschanel's album because A) she wrote all the songs, B) she is not as big of a star as Scarlett, C) she is more of an indie actress and D) M. Ward's involvement as part of the group She & Him -- not released under her name.
With that said, I like the songs that I've heard. I think she is brave to let her natural voice come through, even when it is not perfect. I also like the production. Sometimes I wish that Tunde from TV on the Radio was actually singing them. Pretty solid all around really. Hopefully, people buy it who haven't heard Tom Waits and go back and listen to him.

I like the production. Her voice is shit, though. Perhaps thats the reason for going with that "wall of sound" production Sitek used here. She's got great (o)(o) though, so its got that going for it.
