Neither am I. I have a friend who's obsessed with them, so he got me into them. BSSM best album, then Californication. I'd say that By the Way is a sad departure except for a few songs (like "Can't Stop") (Note: I love that video!!!!!) Yeah, it's slower, and it looks like this Stadium Arcadium double disc business is going to be the same long, drawn-out stuff that a recovering drug addict who goes shirtless into his fifties would make. By the Way, Stadium Arcadium is supposed to be coming out May 9 for all you die-hards out there.

He released 6 albums in 6 months, each covering a different genre. I own a couple of the 6 (Curtains and Inside of Emptiness) and am not really blown away by them, I was expecting something funky and a bit different from him, kinda like from BSSM era but it all seems pretty bland and samey.

Well I'd certainly hope its not 28 songs of Californiacation and By the Way blandness mushed together. Surely there will be some funk/punk stuff thrown back in there from the old days (freaky styley/mother's milk/BSSM) when RHCP was a really good band. And I was researching the new album because I was surprised RHCP would throw out not only a new album but one with 28 songs and Kiedis had this to say, "There is a weird thread that connects back to our first three records, there's this weird kind of sublime, subliminal undercurrent that is suggestive, in a spirited way, of our earliest records. There's some retardedly painful funk on this record. There are a few songs that are just straight-up dirty funk, and beyond that, there's this ongoing progression of everything else that has been slowly happening between Californication and By the Way, with harmonies and textures." Looks like it will be a mix of the past and the new which I'm looking forward to if they can pull it off but I'm sort of unimpressed with the clip I heard of their new single "Dani California."

Yeah, I agree. The clip i heard of "Dani California" was a little less than impressive.. except of course for a cool bass line from Flea: could we expect anything less? Nonetheless, i probably will end up getting their new album, especially if they're going back to the funk, as everyone's been saying. One thing I don't want to hear is a double By The Way!

so now that the album's out whats everyones thoughts of it? My friend says its extremely good (2nd only to BSSM) and every song is incredibly consistent and he has very good taste in both indie and alternative rock.. Then again pitchfork slammed it but everyone saw that coming. For some reason I'm thinking the album is better than the critics are making it out to be, but i'd like to hear some of yalls thoughts

No disrespect, but you're in the minority on that one, there, bud. I think the Red Hot Chili Peppers are fucking amazing. I think they're like the Gang of Four of frat rock, and that's ok. They're the closest thing our generation's getting to Led Zeppelin or the Rolling Stones. What I'm saying is: RHCP are getting to, if they're not already there, the status of living legend.

well...i happen to love RHCP...and i dont have a favorite album, but my favorite song is aeroplane i know that this thread is like...2 months old...but stuff it
my favorite band(the whitlams) has done the same thing as RHCP...in fact ALOT of bands do it once they become popular
they commercialised their music - which means they produce it alot more aloowing it to have a more "perfect" sound
the problem with this is that the music becomes more "boring" in a sense...
in the early days there was a more imaginative, broader style of music - then once they made it big time, they stuck to what sold millions of albums
why?
because having millions of people "kinda like" your music sells you alot of records
whereas having 10 000 people love it only gives you a small amount of money(compared to millions)
therefore in a way, you could say "their sound has matured"
but, then again you could also say "they are crap now"
or you could say "they are still really good, but their old stuff is better"
note: many bands do this - such as green day(though they didnt mellow out or mature...they just became absolute crap...)

i would love to hear opinions on stadium arcadium now that is released and has been for some time now...while it lacks much of the "funk" of early RHCP i still think it was a great album...i think they actually put a lot of thought into their lyrics for once and have taken their music to a new level...while i do miss the old RHCP, i must admit this is one of my favorite albums of the year

I'm not too cool to admit that I can't take RHCP. They're bass solos are pretty cool though, I'll give em that.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik funk-rocked my world for years but little else from the RHCP has meant much to me since or before that album. Nice songwriting and music vids since, but nothing as visceral and fresh as BSSM. Perhaps there's only so much of Mr Kiedis that I can stand after the initial rush - before it grows old, quickly. Respekt to Flea and Frusciante though.
Trust in God but remember to tie up your camel
