Before David Baker left after their first two albums, Mercury Rev was one of the best bands of the 90's. Yerself is Steam and Boces are two of the best albums of all time. Unfortunately, after Baker left, they lost there sense of humor, there harshness, and overall worth completely. Now they make cheesy dream pop.
^Deserter' s Songs (1998)is in my top 10 list with my fav albums ever.anyway.
"Snowflake Midnight" is an excellent release and surprisingly totally different from their latest efforts. Their new material will make more sense if you 'll hear their second "free to download" (from their official site) album "Strange Attractor" which in some parts sounds even better than the first one. as a whole its up with their best work and their "new" direction shows a band that have still a lot to offer.
If anyone is interested in seeing Mercury Rev play in NYC, the website www.shortandsweetnyc.com is giving away 2 sets of tickets to see them play at the Highline Ballroom with Dean & Britta this sunday December 7th.
Maybe it's just me but the new Animal Collective really reminds me of "See You on the Other Side" although it's been years since I've listened to it so I could be very wrong.

no its not only you and you are definitely not wrong! ...but it reminds me more of "Strange Attractor/ Snowflake Midnight" (2008). (such an underaated release)

"Deserter's Songs" is a melancholy woozy joy from start to finish - def the best place to start and perhaps finish! I know that's not really fair to the 'rev but this album is just so bloody impressive. I still regularly give it a 'spin' over a decade since its release and I can't say the same for their other albums - especially their most recent efforts which I have enjoyed but seemed to fade away all too quickly after listening.
