Not so certain this thread belongs in the indie forum (kind of hard to classify the Queens), but with Spoon rightfully getting a lot of love recently for being so damn consistent, I think some might agree that with Era Vulgaris getting pretty well received by the critics and fans (best ever 4 stars for QOTSA from Rolling Stone, yet another 4.5 from AMG, 100% from Uncut), the Queens also deserve to be considered one of the best rock bands of the decade. I realize they're not for everybody, but if you dig their brand of rock, you've got to be impressed with the following list of albums all this decade: Rated R, Songs for the Deaf, Lullabies to Paralyze and now Era Vulgaris (I'm only a couple of listens in, but I think I'm going to once again agree with the critics). Has anybody checked out the new one?

Considering the Queens are on Universal records, and they rock hard, no, this thread doesn't belong here.

But I like 'em and hope its a good album.

I would classify them as alternative rock, myself.

As for Era Vulgaris, it hasn't stuck with me too well. There are a couple of good songs (3s and 7s, Turn on the Screw) but it's all a bit samey if you ask me.

I would have put this in rock, but I'm not gonna protest the location of the discussion of one of my fav. bands.
The new album has been leaking and streaming everywhere, and I think it's great. Amazing riffs the whole time, and it's gonna dominate my car's CD player for a huge chunk of the summer.

Era Vulgaris is far better than Lullabies. It has some kick ass songs like Sick, Sick, Sick 3s & 7s, Make it Witchu and Misfit Love.
And finally Rolling Stone gave QOTSA the credit that they deserve.
The only problem is that ever since Nick was kicked out of the band Josh Homme has made albums and songs that are more for chicks that for rocking hard... but, it's great anyway

While I think each of their last two albums have been great in their own right, I really don't feel they've topped Songs for the Deaf. The bass has had it's moments since Nick left (Sick,Sick,Sick officially begins kicking ass the second the bass comes in), but have they ever since grooved the way they did during the instrumental interlude of "A Song for the Dead"? At any rate, I'm still lovin' the new one.

As for Rolling Stone, there aren't enough hours in the weekend to finish a criticism of their reviews. To say that the Queens have just hit their peak (??)... wake up guys!! At any rate, lets all rest more comfortably tonight realizing the Queens are now offically (as per Rolling Stone) out of Fall Out Boy territory and now on par with My Chemical Romance!!

RS reviews are pretty useless. 3.5 stars across the board, with the exception of established artists (Rolling Stones, Dylan) who get 5 stars based almost on reputation alone. Also, there's the occasional puzzling 4 star selection (Weezer's Make Believe).
Right now there's a great Robert Christgau review for Icky Thump that is getting killed in the comments section.
As far as Era Vulgaris is concerned, I'm far more impressed with the AMG review.

The first QOTSA song I ever heard was "Monsters in the Parasol" when it was in rotation on the old MTV2. I thought it was pretty killer, but I never would have guessed that they'd become one of my favorite bands.

Songs for the Deaf still has the most staying power on my playlist. The lineup for that album was just excellent. Nick may have gone a bit loopy, but he's a hell of a bass player. And just listen to the drumming on "First It Giveth" and you'll understand why Dave Grohl is Dave Grohl.

But getting to the point, Josh Homme is the badass heart and soul of QOTSA. He proved it on Lullabies and continues to impress me on Era Vulgaris. The guy has metal pumping through his veins.

Personally, I am loving this album just because of how complete I find it. Track to track its really smooth and I know this sometimes gives off the 'samey' feeling mentioned before but to me I find it actually enhances the overall performance feeling you get from listening to the cd.

All in all, I think they did a really good job since I got this CD a while ago and its still one of my most played items on iTunes. So as a listening album overall I think its stellar and I'd give it a full recommendation to anyone.

This record is great. It may be the best they've done.

its not their best album so far , but its still a very good QOTSA release.

Well it's December, which means it's time to start putting the year in perspective. I haven't listened to this record much since July, but I'm listening to it right now and think it will probably land in my top 20. This is definitely the best RAWK album of the year.

Yeah, this will be in my top 20 as well.

Alas, I never really got into this album. They're one of my fav bands and Songs for the deaf is one of the best albums ever made but this one feels more like "The Josh Homme Project" rather than a new QoTSA album. Now I think josh is great but no one else from that band that I love, or any of his guest musicians, came across much at all.

I still like it a lot. Rather unapologetically, my favorite song is by far the mildest cut ("Make It Wit Chu").

Mine, too. As a whole, though, I find the album too monotonous.

that was my first thought too , but now i think that you can find better tracks than this ("I'm Designer" , "Into The Hollow").
In my opinion its not a monotonous album.every track have its own style n sound.maybe the whole album sounds too confusing but its the result of tryin different things n puttin so many ideas here.
with "era vulgaris" seems that Dionysus s having a weird party , even if that sense is not so common after all...

It certainly isn't Queens' best album, but it is quite a bit better then Lullabies to Paralyze. I really like "Into the Hollow" and "I'm Designer" also, sk. Those are probably the best tracks on Era Vulgaris. It'll end up in my top 20 for sure, maybe top 10.
