Wihout Joy Division, Interpol would not even exist. Although "Turn on the bright lights" is a fantastic record, can not be in same lavel as "Unknown pleasures" and "Closer" . So i think my answer is obvious...
My reality is different than yours

Erm. I hate to sound like an old fogey just preferring older bands by default, but Joy Division, without even thinking hard. And I like Interpol a lot. I disagree with the sentiment that the descendant cannot be superior to the original, but really, in this case, Joy Division is just better, let alone the fact that they were vastly more influential.

Interpol should be matched with Editors not with Joy Division.

With such lyrical gems as "bitch slap maybelline" and "she was my catatonic sex toy lovedrug diver"...is it even a contest? The repetition alone is enough to drive you crazy, but combined with assinine lyrics, Interpol is just god awful. I don't know how they drummed up so much acclaim in the first place.
riiiight.
