"Loss, regret, and a minor key brilliantly permeate jangling guitars and rhythmic and tonal shifts-- and although it's no Closer or OK Computer, it's not unthinkable that this band might aspire to such heights."
This is from the Pitchfork review of "Turn Out The Brigh Lights". So, it's no Closer, so they say. I think it's better the Closer, and on the same lever with Unknown Pleasures. I like the first JD album more, it's darker, Closer is more comercial(thought still brilliant). Antics is many ways similar to Closer. So, I'm making this poll but I'm not sure what to respond. Interpol means more to me, but I was born in 82, so that migh be a factor.
Oh dear god, you have got to be fuckin' kidding me Vancea!!!! 1. To even contemplate such a comparison 2. Turn out the Bright Lights better than Closer!!!! Are you possessed of tin ears me boy??? I'm going off to be sick...these Vs. threads are getting ridiculous!!

So you start this thread off with a horrible quote from an unpublished, incredible website? Well, maybe that belongs in the publications forum. These constant "vs." threads are getting old, and old quick. Simply because I don't understand what was so great about Joy Division and because I am huge Interpol fan I will go with Interpol.
Although, "Interpol means more to you" and it you obviously love them, you should be advised that the album is not "Turn Out The Brigh Lights" but rather Turn on the Bright Lights. How you can love a band/artist and not even know what their albums are titled?

Jesus, everybody's a critic. FragileKidA, when your first language is not english mistakes happen. It's to late to edit becouse then the votes will be reset(so I am told).
PS. You made a mistake too, I think you wanted to say "if" not "it you obviously love them". I actually like this "vs." threads and I think this one makes sense, it's not Right Said Fred vs. The Beatles.
I kind of understand if your first language wasn't English. But there really is not much I can say to that since my first language was also not English. I can take the spelling and grammar mistakes--more than some others on here can--but I just don't understand how someone can not know what an album is titled by one of their supposed favorite artists.
My bad about the "it." It should have been "since" and I am not too sure why I put "it" instead of "since."

Interpol are ace but you surely can't beat the innovative genius of Curtis and co. Joy Division will always be the pioneers and that alone puts them ahead of any other similar band.
The Smiths are the greatest band of all time. No argument.

You took the time to make two very hostile posts because somebody who can't speak perfect English accidentally typed "out" instead of "on". Think about it.

Joy Division are the better band, no doubt about it. I've listened to JD more than Interpol and think that both Interpol albums combined cannot match up to one JD album. THE END... Thank you come again.

/agree. Unknown Pleasures, Closer, Bright Lights, Antics, in that order of quality.
joy division were certainly more influencial, and much more iconic but i'm still going to have to give the vote to interpol simply because 'antics' has shown their work to be more versatile, and i bought 'turn on the bright lights' just as i was becoming more knowledgable of music and discovered joy division through them.

how are these comparable? it's taking a legendary band unique and innovative to their time, and comparing them to their imitators 20 years down the line.

Finally, Joy Division are in front. How long does it take people to realise that Interpol are nothing but Joy Division Lite?
It's like comparing Ramones and Blink 182 (ok that's most likely an overstatement, but still you understand my point and that's just how I feel about the two bands in question)
