OK, first impressions:

I just got my discbox yesterday so this is all still fresh to me. First of all, the artwork is impeccable, probably the best he has ever created for the band. Just even the only artwork book, if they separately sell these somewhere, I would definitely buy a few, frame them and put them up on the wall. The artwork is just exceptionally remarkable, everything from the cover to the book, to where the lyrics are—superb.

I have heard the vinyl and CD version and it’s like hearing the album all over again. It does come with two records and they are super thick; three songs each on the first record and two songs each on the second one. After I finally figured out how to change the speed on my record player to play at 45 (I’m dumb, I know,) it was heavenly. The music sounds exciting, crisp and clear and Thom’s voice is like an angel singing directly to you.

I just got through my first listen of disc two and I think it is astounding as well. I don’t care about whether people think this is better than the actual album or why so and so song was left off as opposed to this or that, all I know is that I love their music. The highlights are well, everything, even the short “MK” songs are spectral and moving. If I had to choose one, it would be “Last Flowers to the Hospital,” that piano part is so melodic and evocative. I can’t wait until I tackle it and attempt to learn it—now if only I could sing like the aforementioned angel.

I was wondering if anyone in the US went out and bought the album today. I couldn't figure out if the second disc was also being released or packaged with the first disc (but not in a disc box)? I looked on a few store websites and it seems that only the first "disc" is being released, which is dissapointing. How are those of us who can't afford an $80 discbox supposed to get it?! Still, I need to use up my best buy gift card so maybe a trip is in order...

I bought it today, with a best buy gift card, too!

The packaging is beautiful, but I'm not going to apply it to an old jewel case; i'm gonna leave it just as it is. The music sounds so much more clear, almost as if you're in the studio while the band is recording. the lyrics booklet is filled with art that amazed and moved me.

A great package.

And in a week, the discbox will be arriving on my doorstep too, so WOOHOO!

My sister got the album today and the packaging is pretty nice. I gave her a new jewel case and she put everything inside of it. It comes with some stickers to use on the case but she chose to just insert them and not stick them on and no, the second disc is not included—sorry.

After she did that, she gave me the envelope and the small slip so I can use it when I take my discs with me to hear in the car since my discbox didn’t come with one—not that I am complaining though. Cool

I picked it up.

First off, let me say, the packaging is tacky, cheap and pointless. I see no reason for them to have the stickers and such, really. If you're going to have something fun like that, go with The Information's style of creative design -- here there are no options, no multitudes of stickers. It's kinda stupid if you ask me. Razzer

The album is... solid. Kinda. It feels like the reductive hooklessness of Kid A crossed with the retread-y genre mix of Hail To The Thief, and I must say it makes for a very uncompelling listen. These are skeletal, stripped down pop songs, but though the raw emotion is there, the music isn't; there's so little left that I find In Rainbows a distinctly uninteresting listen aside from a couple highlights. What's there is good, but after a full listen I wanted to take the case, shake it and see if the rest of the songs would drop out. Sort of a "that's it?" syndrome -- the portions are small and the music thin rather than lush.

This isn't to say it isn't a pretty good album, I'm just not thrilled with this disc.

Initial thoughts on In Rainbows:

The packaging sucks. Those of you who got the download, don't bother.

"15 Steps" - I love this track. I love the little off-kilter beat and the tasteful guitar part.

"Bodysnatchers" - Yawn.

"Nude" - Double yawn.

"Weird Fishes/Arpeggi" - This starts out nice, but ultimately doesn't do much for me.

"All I Need" - Are you kidding me?

"Faust Arp" - Again this one starts out nice, but even though it's short, Thom's singing style on this track gets old real quick.

"Reckoner" - This one takes a little while to get going, but it is ultimately rewarding.

"House of Cards" - Five and half minute snoozefest.

"Jigsaw Falling Into Place" - Love the little spanish guitar intro. Really the first track since the opener that I'm genuinely excited about.

"Videotape" - I didn't like this one the first few times I heard it a few months ago, and it does little for me now.

Overall, I'd give it 4 out of 10.

I definitely like the album more then you do MJ, but the tracks that you find boring are the same ones that I think bog it down the most. "Nude", "All I Need" and "House of Cards" just kinda go nowhere in my opinion. I like the rest of the album quite a bit, but I could do without those three.

I had a stick of CareFree gum, but it didn't work. I felt pretty good while I was blowing that bubble, but as soon as the gum lost its flavor I was back to pondering my mortality.

I agree that "House of Cards" is the album's weak spot, but I like "Nude" and "All I Need" quite a bit.

Oh give me a break up, you know you bought it because it was so cheap. If it came in a case with a "multitudes of stickers" it wouldn't have been 8 bucks. Plus, doesn't your manual prohibit such a purchase?

As for the song-by-song breakdown, the only one I really have a problem with is “All I Need.” This is a much more basic album than their previous ones but it is still tremendous. Some fans are so hard to please though, they whine because Radiohead is “too weird” and ask, “why are they are trying so hard?” and then when they do scale it back, the album is “boring” and “too stripped down.” I don’t understand it, it’s a ton better than “creative” slops like TV on the Radio’s latest, if you ask me.

Stickers, packaging and such do not cost the companies that make them a dime, Frag. (More like individual cents, if that much.) They're cheap as hell and I'm not really sure why they didn't just give us a jewel case. What makes you think I bought it new anyway? I'm seriously curious.

Interestingly enough, this is my favorite song on the album, followed by "Videotape." I really like both, the former will end up on my year end list.

Moi?

I do take this as a jab at me, consider my response worded as such.

I've never actually complained that Radiohead is too weird, if I have, I can't honestly stand by that criticism at this point in time. I have reservations about Kid A for the same reason I have strong reservations about In Rainbows; they're pop albums without the pop.

Are you sure you're in the right thread?

Obviously, Return To Cookie Mountain sucking would dramatically improve the quality of In Rainbows, eh?

I figured you bought it because you mentioned you were listening to it on the first and then you mentioned here, in detail, the packaging and didn’t you also say “I picked it up?” I think I added all of that up to make my claim. And, I guess inside of my foolish head, with the no case, stickers and “cheap” packaging I assumed that that’s why the CD was as cheap as it was. Even looking at the sticker Best Buy had on it, at regular price after this week it will be $12, which is still not bad. And who knows, maybe they did things differently because they are, well Radiohead, and have always liked to go against the grain? Again, this is just my foolish brain thinking.

Nothing in my post was a jab at you. I do disagree with you that the two albums you mentioned are “hookless” and “pop albums without the pop” but that’s just opinion.

I only mentioned TV on the Radio because many people hailed it as the most creative and innovative thing since sliced bread last year. I don’t think that it’s “sucking would dramatically improve the quality of In Rainbows” for me. I still think it sucks but suck or no suck, I like Radiohead’s newest just fine.

The stickers seem like a cheap way to avoid the cost of providing jewel cases to the public, but the artwork in the booklet is pretty cool. My only issue is that the lyrics are almost impossible to read, because of the way they are so spaced out. I need to hold a sheet of paper under each line to follow them.

It's certainly nice to hear the songs in high quality, though. It was worth my $8. It was kind of a sneaky idea Radiohead had, coming up with a way for people to buy their album twice. I don't regret it, though. I only paid 2 pounds for the download, and bought the CD at Best Buy instead of the local (but higher priced) record store I usually frequent.

The lyric spacing is interesting to me. It flops as a book of poetry. That said, on normal lyric sheets I tend to read too fast, and outpace the music by a good clip. About a third of the way through the album, I picked up the booklet and started reading along, and my eyes actually had to race over the letters, basically matching the tempo of the music. It is a little hard to follow but once I got used to it, I liked it.

It was a very fresh experience. In my case that design choice worked really well.

I don’t understand, I thought I did answer the question.

Umm, you mentioned hearing it on the first and I figured it must be a new copy because it came out on the first? I didn’t think somebody would buy it on the first, sell it back on the first and then you buy it used on the first.

"nude" and "All I need" are both great. "House of Cards" is the closest thing to a weak spot, but I like that one. Also, the end coda on "Last flowers" is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard
