Yeah - I was going to complain about where this topic ended up when the album first came out, but when I thought about it, this IS the best place for it.
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.

Idk. Plenty of bands have done what they did, previous to them.. and the songs were higher quality. Everyone acts like Radiohead is the first band to give away an album for free download, but small bands have done this since they first realized that it could be an excellent way to get their name out. Tim Fite is the first person to come to mind.. the Stars essentially did the same thing too.

It's funny really. It's actually my fault that this discussion is under Indie since I was the one to start the discussion, but ironically I thought I was in the Alternative section when I started it. It wasn't until after I realized I had posted it in the Inde that I decided there might actually be some argument that it could fall under either classification. So I left it. Personally, and maybe even ironically, I think it actually would be better suited in the Alternative section now. If the term "Indie" refers to the label that releases it, this is not Indie. It will be widely distributed with a large monitary backing and will be supported by all the major outlets (Walmart, Best Buy, Kmart, whatever). It is already highly publisized and advertised, wether they put a lot of money into it or not (which I think they did). If Indie refers to production quality, In Rainbows probably cost more to produce than a majority of the albums out this year. Big studios, Big name producers, it's a big production (they had a session with a choir of children at a school, just for a track of some kids yelling "Yeah!" in 15 Steps...). If Indie refers to the sound of the music and the direction of the song writing (the definition I hold to). Then it's not Indie at all. The songs are not derivative in anyway. They don't experiment or move in new and different directions. They aren't songs made by people that are trying to move away from the mainstream music scene, they are songs by people that are trying to walk the line while still staying accesible. This isn't an insult. It's just a fact. I like In Rainbows. But it's not Indie by my definition of the term.

There. It's in Alternative now. I used my fascist powers for good.

Just for the fun of it, I did a little track by track.
1.15 Step- Solid song start to finish. Might not be my pick for track 1. Don't like the scratchy/crackling sound I hear throughout.
2. Bodysnatchers- There's not much I like about this song. I'll leave it at that.
3. Videotape- Could do without the first 40 seconds of this track. After that, it's sublime.
4. Weird fishes- Love the vocals on this track. Thom just carries the song away. Beautiful.
5. All I need- After some urging from others, I embraced this track. Glad I did. It's a moody, ballad with a fresh sound for Radiohead.
6. Faust Arp- Meh. I can't get into this track. I'm unaffected by the vocals or the instrumentation. A bit uninspired.
7. Reckoner- Baffling. So many good things come together on this track. Radiohead showing what they're capable of.
8. House of Cards- For the first half of the song, Thom sounds pretty uninspired, then, half way through he just lifts it up into the clouds. Great song.
9. Jigsaw falling into place- Drums are phenomenal on this track. This would've been my pick for track 1.
10. Videotape- I'm not sure if Thom's trying to convey desparation in this song, but that's what I hear. Beautiful song.

Really. I mean, Radiohead belong in the Indie section. Not in here with Good Charlotte and Green Day. What an insult.

Maybe Radiohead needs there own subgroup. Like "Lord of the Rings" has in the Movie section, and "Harry Potter" has in the Book section. ... No. Radiohead is alternative, who are we kidding.

No way, cause then Markf will want to start a whole new 'Beatles" section. And Eric75 will want to create a new section for The Village People. There would be no end to it.

Actually I like Green Day a lot. Grouping them with Good Charlotte is pretty insulting to a long, successful and fairly acclaimed career.

It's weird how the connotation of "Alternative" has changed. When I was growing up, "Alternative" was the stuff you didn't hear on the radio, alot of which was on independent labels. Most kids nowadays use the term "Alternative" to describe mainstream rock, while the term "Rock" now just refers to classic rock. Radiohead would've been labeled an "Alternative" band when Pablo Honey came out, but now that the term has taken on a different connotation, the band's fans balk at the label. It's funny.

"Alternative" as a genre really only has bad connotations for me anymore. The genre and the bands it's composed of represent everything that has gone wrong with rock music. Bands like Linkin Park, Blink 182, post-'Insomniac' Greenday, My Chemical Romance, and all those other horrid, disgraceful Warped Tour bands, just made a mockery of alternative music. Major labels basically bought out the Alternative genre. And boy did they ever capitalize. Now when someone says "Alternative" I cringe and run the other direction. And poor Radiohead is stuck in Alt. with all these boy bands.

Someday "Indie" will become mainstream and we can debate about wether Radiohead is a part of the next underground movement called ... something like NewMu... Actually. Let's start the debate now. I think Radiohead isn't NewMu at all. They are definitely still Alternative.

when i think about alternative, i think about electric guitar, and when i think about radiohead i don't think about electric guitar. I think about depressive electronic sounds.

I like that idea, but instead of identifying everything, we're gonna toss all categories and make the Music forum one big free-for-all. You ready? One-Two-Thr..
