Not that I put much stock in the opinion of Grammy voters, but I was hoping Radiohead had made the deadline for this year's awards. There are a ton of great albums this year, but very few that even have a chance at getting recognized. Radiohead would have been one of the few (Wilco??), but I just read September 30 is the cut off for the release date. Bummer.
The wouldn't nominate it anyways because purchases of "In Rainbows" don't financially benefit the industry. The albums that get nominated are always the most profitable in their respective categories.
Agreed. However, it seems they do, on occasion, try to give the appearance of being hip by nominating a band like Radiohead (yes, OK Computer and Kid A made more $$ for record labels, but still). It would still have been a longshot, especially given that it would have had little time to build steam, but it really is just a great record.

I don't know about that. OK Computer and Kid A were both nominated for album of the year. So was Beck's Odelay and his Midnite Vultures, for album of the year. I don't remember either one of those making a lot of money.

Is my memory failing me, or did Radiohead lose to Dylan's "Time out of Mind" for best album in 1998, the same year as the infamous "Soy Bomb" incident?
I don't think you can get a Grammy nomination if your album isn't released on an RIAA affiliated label. I'm not being sarcastic with that comment, but I'm pretty sure I've never seen a true indie album get a nomination. Can anyone confirm or deny that?

Well, maybe not "always." But I don't see them rewarding Radiohead this time around, given how they released it. They wouldn't want to give their approval to their own demise.
I love Dylan, "Time Out of Mind" was great, but I think Dylan's then-recent health issues helped pull him through that year. No way was it better than OK Computer.

I am pretty sure you are right. Though I am not positive, the Grammy website only lists the winners of year's past, not all the nominees.

I think this probably has more to do with the fact that not as many people (and critics) would get to hear it. I don't know if it's necessarily that they weren't affiliated with a RIAA label.

A Wikipedia search turned up the fact that Arcade Fire's Funeral was nominated, and they're on Merge. To my knowledge, Merge is not affiliated with the RIAA. That's the only example I could find though.

I hate to hijack this thread, but I just realized that I am now an Apprentice Guru! Kick ass! It's weird though, technically, I'd rather be a know-it-all than an apprentice of anything. I'm the kind of guy that honestly feels that he does indeed know it all.

Yeah, i'd much rather go right from a know-it-all to a guru. I feel that I have what it takes to be a guru. In fact, I think i'd make a hell of good jedi. Who do I have to battle with around here to become a jedi?
Would a digital release even count for the Grammys? I was wondering if they wouldn't even count it as released until a hard copy is issued. I'm not familiar with the rules.
Ok, after listening to this album on repeat since 6:00 a.m. last Wednesday, I think it's safe to say I love it. Radiohead have recorded some emotional songs before (“Let Down” or “How to Disappear Completely," for instance) but none of their previous albums have ever sounded this beautiful and emotional all the way through. It's definitely their most accessible album since The Bends.
"Reckoner" is amazing, and I've played it more than any other song. But as I keep listening, all the songs are outstanding for me. Even the ones I didn't notice as much at first, such as "Jigsaw Falling Into Place" or "Faust ARP." "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi", "All I Need," "Reckoner," and "Videotape" are probably my favorites, but it's a wonderful album all the way through. I'm predisposed to love an album with an abundance of good melodies and beautiful strings; I have to work harder at appreciating albums like "Amnesiac" (although I do love it, it took quite a while to grow on me). This one is just easy to love; I'm afraid it will spoil me if they decide to turn experimental again.
Speaking of which, do you think they will actually record again? Maybe that's a strange question to ask so soon after the release of this album, but I can't help wondering - between this and the bonus CD, they're releasing almost all their unreleased material. Thom and Jonny have pursued solo projects, and who knows if they'll even go on a long tour (since they're so concerned about the environmental effects of touring). I think at the very least it might be an equally long wait.
Which is fine, because I can listen to In Rainbows for a long time!
