For those that said Thom sounds better than ever on this album, I couldn't disagree more. This is his worst album vocally. He sounds like he has nothing invested emotionally in this album. Kind of like he's just going through the motions. In fact, i'd rather say if I can put my finger on one factor that drags this album down the most, it's Thom's uninspired vocals.
I don't think you can get much more uninspired then his approach on Kid A and Amnesiac. Granted: that stoich, buried effect is what they were going for (and it works) but Thom isn't hardly singing on either of those albums. He hardly even sounds like he's trying on "How To Disappear Completely". Again, this is not necessarily a knock beause I love that song, but I'm not quite understanding where you're coming from hudson.
Yeah, i'm quite aware of Yorke's sound on their other albums. But thanks for pointing that out to me, not.
I think I explained myself just fine. His voice sounds dull, emotionless. It sounds like he's just going through the motions, singing words without really feeling anything. Monotonous and lifeless is how I would describe it.
How else can I describe it for you. It sounds exactly like this; like he was on his last of 900 takes for each song. Like he was just dying to get the track finished, like he's sung those songs a million freakin' times and lets just get em' done already.
That's how he sounds to me. But then again, the album itself sounds like 3 standout tracks and the rest are varied degrees of filler. It'll still be in my top 10.
I think he sounds like he's about to break down and cry.. not in a good way either. In an obnoxious, annoying, "get a grip of yourself!!" way. On my first couple listens I didn't mind it.. even liked it on "Nude". But it's just getting really grating. It doesn't even seem real, it seems forced and uninspired, which is why I think it may annoy me. Previously Yorke's voice had a lot of emotion but:
A. The vocals weren't mixed in the front of the track B. He seemed to have something driving him to the emotion, some inspiration (I.e. Hail To The Thief)
And I don't get all this talk about Hail to the Thief being "bloated" and all the other things said about it. That's always been up there for my favorites.. I think I like it more than Ok Computer.
EDIT:

To those of you who think this album doesn't push boundaries, I disagree. Songs like "All I Need" and "Reckoner" have me baffled. Kid A wasn't nearly as minimalistic as this album is. I've decided to assume that this album was completely intentional. How can the band that played "Paranoid Android" turn out something as simple as "Videotape"? This album requires a million listens, I'm sure. It won't reveal itself quickly and I think that makes it great.
We're up to a 19 page thread in less than two weeks. Whatever anyone thinks about the new album, one thing that is undeniable is Radiohead are more relevant than ever.
Oh, and IR sounded great when I was in bed last night with my gf. Definitely not mood killing, if you know what I mean. YMMV.

Decent enough response, but I could've done without that little quip. I'm not sure that anything I said really warranted that type of response:

hudson, what exactly is your problem? I disagree with you and you become a smart-ass all of the sudden? Are you just trying to pick a fight with me? Nobody here wants to see that kind of talk. If you're not going to discuss in an appropriate manner, then I think I speak for most of us at MC that I'd rather you keep your comments to yourself.

Oh quit your crying. You sound like 13 year old girl that got her feelings hurt. Just listen to your music and let people have their own opinions. I gave mine, you didn't like it and that's fine. Now move along. But word of advice; the next time you call someone out in regards to their opinion, be prepared for a straighforward response. That'll be all.
People like to discuss music here without being treated like crap by someone who thinks they know it all. You can disagree with someone's stance, but don't be a condescending jerk when you do so. I know you're not an adult, but please do us all a favor and try to act like one.
If you can't behave yourself, take your posting elsewhere. This is your final warning.

Hey dude, I never attacked anyone, I never violated the TOS for this site. I simply stated my opinion. I never knew it was against the rules to be pithy or "smartass" as you call it.
But if you want to use you heavy handed tactics as a moderator and intimidate me with expulsion, then go ahead and do it. Eventhough you have no right to, just the power to do so.
In fact, if anyone is called names around here, it's me. For someone reason you and you buddies are allowed to bust my balls but when it comes back to you, you just can't handle it.
You called me a "condescending jerk", doesn't that constitute a personal attack? Is name-calling your deal?
This is Metacritic, not an emo forum, so quit your crying people.
To get back on track. #7 Reckoner is slowly joining the group of standout tracks on this album, for me at least.
