I've had a song in my head for a while now that I need to identify. The big clue is that it robs the guitar lick from "Take Me I'm Yours" by Squeeze, almost exactly. It has a mild dance/house feel but still sounds like 90s alt rock (think EMF, but darker), with quiet unskilled singing. I think the band's name has "UK" in it somewhere.
From your description of the singer and the vibe, I'm guessing it's the Charlatans UK. I only have their first album, so I can give it a spin later to see if I hear the riff.
"Naked Woman, Naked Man Where did you get that nice sun tan?"

I did a little digging and actually figured it out...you're right Mark, it's the Charlatans UK and the song is "Weirdo" from their second album. It was a radio hit on alt. stations about 15 years ago. Luckily just seeing the title was enough to want to download it and confirm.
Brings back memories of working a paper route with my parents when I was a young kid, driving around at 4am listening to the then new bands Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Blur, etc. A real nostalgia trip, this one...
