I don't know where else to put it, but hey, whatever. I think their best album is their debut, hands down, and if you disagree, then I guess that's your deal.
My favorite song by them would have to be either Narcolepsy or the Background. How about you?
Oh, and if anybody knows anything about whether they've died or what, post that here too.

This belongs in Alternative as much as The Counting Crows belong in Indie. Either way, it's here and so am I. I have a burned CD which consists of tracks from Third Eye Blind, Matchbox 20, and Marcy Playground. I think all three are decent top 40 Rock/Pop with some good songs and some awful songs. The connection between the three besides time of release is that they are all pretty much face value bands. The singles are good and, for the most part, the non-singles were non-singles for a reason.

Huh? I assume you say that because they're mainstream, and have been quite popular in the past. If that's your position, I'd argue "Alternative" as a genre stopped meaning genuinely, definitionally alternative over 10 years ago. That's like saying Godspeed! You Black Emperor (or wherever the exclamation goes these days) isn't post-rock, because they're not actually after the rock movement, which has never ended. Or some other convoluted analog.
Where would you suggest this thread take place? The Rock forum became the Classic Rock forum in spirit long ago. This wouldn't fit in with discussions of your favorite guitar solo or whether or not AC/DC is overrated.

What other forums do we need? I've heard a few mentioned here and there, but if somebody wants to suggest something, we may be able to do something about it. Should we have Classic Rock and Modern (Non-Alternative, Non-Indie) Rock? Punk? (Non-Hardcore and Hardcore), Classical? Gospel? Post-Grunge? Avant Garde? I'm not blowin' smoke, but I don't really want to make new forums and end up with 5-10 posts in 'em after a year or more.

Personally, I think we have all the categories we can handle. It might be more granular if there was a Punk or Modern Rock forum, but I think it's easier to figure out which forum to post in when there are few categories to choose from, even though that means occasionally shoehorning a topic when it doesn't fit perfectly.

I think Third Eye Blind may fit better in the mainstream rock section, but they are representative of how hard it is to properly classify music these days. Much of what is generally called "alternative" (and played on alternative radio) is really mainstream rock or hard rock. Considering the description of this category, ("For the more mainstream "alternative" bands…") they could fit here as well.
I own all three 3EB albums, and I must say, for artistic value, I love Blue. I enjoy their music enough, I guess. I checked out their website and I guess they aren't dead.
I think 3EB is the most criminally overlooked band of '90s alternative rock: the same is true with HUM or Failure or the Galactic Cowboys.
I get so much shit for this, but I absolutely love their self-titled and "Blue." They were VERY good songwriters (their third album, "In the Vein" is bleh) and the band's original guitarist who plays on their first two records, Kevin Codagan, studied under Joe Satriani, if that gives him any cred. Bono has also praised Stephen Jenkins' lyrical writing in the press.
I love "10 Days Late" (gives me chills) and "God of Wine" and "Motorcycle Driveby" (both depress me severely), "London" and "Graduate" (both of which are surprisingly, extremely loud live) and "Hows It Gonna Be" -- when's the last time you heard an intro riff on an AUTOHARP, son?! "Never Let You Go" is Beatles catchy with sullen, sarcastic, cynical lyrics.
Seriously, Third Eye Blind is awesome. You guys are just missing out.

I totally agree. Third Eye Blind made great great songs, and though they might have added nothing new to the table, they were perfectly constructed and some of the most lasting of the 90s. I think critics ignored them because it seemed proper to ignore any adult alternative outlet, but I think if the right people caught on, Third Eye Blind could rise to classic underrated standards.
