We only got a thread with like seven posts in two years span about Nick Cave and it’s only about his 2004 album. So I figured this would be a great place to talk about all of his albums. He and his bad seeds have made a lot of really good, solid albums and there are at least three in there that are masterpieces.

I didn’t use to like Nick Cave much at all. I thought his voice was stale and I didn’t like the music. Now though, I am completely enthralled by anything he has done. This year’s Grinderman album is top-notch and I wouldn’t argue with anyone that said his 2004 album is the best thing he has ever done. Thought I might go with Tender Prey or maybe The Boatman’s Call, Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus is pretty amazing as well.

I find him to be an impressive musician and his backing band (the seeds) are a great fit. I now find his voice to be soulful and full of emotion. So this is the place to talk of all things Nick Cave.

Question:
What's your favorite Nick Cave album?

Choices:
From Her to Eternity
The Firstborn Is Dead
Kicking Against the Pricks
Tender Prey
Let Love In
The Boatman's Call
The Secret Life of the Love Song/The Flesh Made Word
No More Shall We Part
Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus
Grinderman

I've only heard like half of his albums, so I'm not fit to vote. I need to get up to par with my Nick Cave scholarship.

I've got most of Nick Cave's stuff (including all the Birthday Party albums) but I really don't love his work. I always enjoy it when I hear it, but I rarely feel the need to put him on. I'd have to vote for Prayers on Fire, which isn't listed. Tender Prey would be my choice from the options posted.

I love Nocturama and No More Shall We Part. Murder Ballads is great, too. His song "Hallelujah" (from NMSWP) is one of my favourite songs.

What!? Im the only one who's voting?! I guess he's from Melbourne and not as well known elsewhere. He's really one of the great songwriters though, and very consistent. It's hard to pick his best - Tender Prey's great, The Good Son and Henry's Dream (where are they?), The Boatman's Call. I chose Let Love In - it's his most 'typical' album, like a greatest hits or something.

Just saw this. I chose The Boatman's Call, which contains some of my favorite Cave songs and is just a really beautiful album.

I left out some of the albums because I didn’t want to have twenty different choices to choose from. I went off mostly what I like the most and didn’t include The Birthday Party albums just because. Sorry though.

So, the first single from the new Bad Seeds album has been released and it sounds great. Just pure energy and attitude.

I put it up on imeem and threw it on my blog, so if you wanna hear it, go that route.

The track is "Dig Lazarus Dig" which is also the name of the new album.

Ha, that’s a good one—if you don’t like Grinderman, I guess.

I heard the first song a few weeks ago and I really liked it. I don’t think Nick Cave can do bad in my book. Even his score for that Assassination of… film is great.

yeah, I was a fan of Grinderman so I really enjoy this... although it has a lot more going on than Grinderman (which was generally pretty bare/straight-forward).

I have the Assassination of Jesse James album sitting on my hdd but haven't gotten to it because... I just haven't felt like it I guess. How would you describe it (I'm expecting some good comparisons and spot-on genre comments, Mr. Wink)

Oh no, the pressure!

Well, I am not sure how to describe it, it’s surely more serious. All of the music was composed by both Cave and one of his “bad seeds” and Grinderman members, Warren Ellis. I would say that it’s pretty intense and compelling, ah I don’t know. Just go listen to it, now!

I'd say Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus only because it's a wonderfully conceived double album which is extremely hard to do in my opinion.
other than that, No More Shall We Part is a very close second followed by The Boatman's Call and Murder Ballads (which strangely doesn't show up in the poll).
Grinderman was excellent, but too raw for my tastes.
The others i don't know well enough to comment on.

I've been getting into No More Shall We Part a lot lately. I love its soulful feel and it has some of Cave's best lyrics. If you haven't heard it yet, you should.

You're missing Your Funeral My Trial, The Good Son, Henrys Dream, Live Seeds from the list.

Tough choice, personally I would say "No More Shall We Part" for your humor, one of Cave's best love songs "love letter" and my favourite Bad Seeds song ever "Darker with the day" and also that fact that it contains a song he wrote with Barry Adamson

yes it is good, i have mixed feelings about it,
each cd only has 9 songs are not full concerts the material focuses mainly on Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus
though of the songs played not on Abattoir are good choices such as stagger lee, red right hand, Lay me low and Ship song...
As much of the same songs are covered between the cds and dvds I would not say its worth full price.

But is worth getting, if only for the video to Bring it on and the 14 min Babe I'm on fire...

it's been out for almost a month here in Europe. i'm a tad disappointed with this new one. It seems that Nick Cave has kept some of the Grinderman sound here which, although very good, isn't my cup of tea. They however have added a lot of organ throughout the album and that's for the best. all in all, it's an alright release, nothing to get excited about. But that's just me. because everyone else i've talked to/read from is really loving it so maybe you'll like it too.

It has about three or four good tracks but pretty forgettable on the whole.
