I've seen them live (with Of Montreal), and thought they were pretty good. I almost saw them live again with Yeasayer, but left early. I should probably pick up the album.
I've been getting to this album in pieces, but there seems to be a lot of good that could be said about this. It is in a weird limbo because of when and how it was released, but I think it might start to gain some footing here someday soon. It bleeps a little brighter on my radar with the new knowledge of a collaboration with Kevin Barnes in the pipe. I hope it comes out of that pipe soon and plops onto my head.
I saw them tour with Of Montreal last year, and not knowing who they were at the time, they definitely caught my attention. I absolutely love Oracular Spectacular. It will no doubt finish in my Top 5, and maybe duking it out with Evangelicals for the top spot (yeah, I know, it's too early...).
Edit: I just realized I posted already in this thread. Well, true to my words, I did pick up the album...obviously.
I'm not a fan of the band at all. PR guy from Sony probably ruined it for me though.
I've read and seen a few interviews, attitude wise they come off as pretentious and fake. I absolutely hate their music video for "Time To Pretend".
Alas a lot of people agree that the album is well done (over production) but 75% of people who have seen them live that I talked to have said they suck.

Man, I don't know about that. I thought they were great live, and I'm pretty picky. After all, would Kevin Barnes want them around if they sucked that bad?
all of my friends are really into this cd, haven't heard much. "time to pretend" hasn't really caught on with me... i mean it's pleasant, but nothing great. "kids" however grabbed me at first listen, and it's a fantastic song.

Yeah, I saw them live with Of Montreal too.
And was completely unimpressed. But everything was so "fuzzed out" (I WAS pretty close to the speakers), I couldn't really tell what was going on in the music. I listened to a song or 2 on myspace to give them a fair try. They're not really impressing me, but they sounded alot better.
But I can see what Kevin Barnes sees in them, Being that his favorite artist is David Bowie (and one of mine, too). And for the few minutes i listened to MGMT, that's the only artist that came to mind (Vocally, at least).

I thought the album was just ok. Like the first time I listened to it the song "Kids" immediately caught my attention, but I thought the rest was pretty bland. Listened again and now "Time to Pretend" stand out as the best track. A third time and "Weekend Wars" is up there.
So yeah, it went from ok to pretty good, hopefully this trend keeps going.
i think time to pretend is one of the weaker tracks on the album... quite a shame that the album starts out like that. if i just listened to the first track, i prob wouldve dismissed the album as well... but it's a weaker song, not a bad song... and the following 9 more than make up for it... songs 7-10 = pure magic.

MGMT are sick. Kids, Time to Pretend, and Electric Feel are absolutely brilliant pop songs. The rest of the album slowly grows on you. Love Always Remains. I dare you to listen to that song a couple of times and not fall in love with it.

Wow...over in the "Best & Worst in 2008" forum everyone has reached a mass consensus that there are only three good songs on the album: "Time to Pretend," "Kids," and "Electric Feel." But there's some real love for them here. I have to say that this album is very underwhelming other than the three standouts, but I'll probably have two of those on my Top 30 Songs list.
+++++ I had a budgie but it died.
