Okay.... I've read the user reviews of the new tori amos, and I am very confused. I need help. I am a big Tori fan from the early years, who has not really 'listened' to anything past Venus. I was disappointed in Choirgirl (I know a lot of you think it's great). But everything released after Boys For Pele hasn't caught my ear for over two listens.
So, as a disappointed fan, who can't get past Boys, Pink and Earthquakes, should I give this a good listen or what???? I've listened to snippets of this new one and really liked what I heard and want to get it..but don't want to be dissed. again.
thanks...

It sounds like a career retrospective to me, with every song touching on different stages in her career and other artists who have influenced her. I'm not a fan, even though I have seen her live and heard all the albums due to my girlfriend. Personally, I think it's the best album she's put out, but I see that some fans and reviewers disagree. Considering that her last two albums were comprised of covers and songs written on the road, this is the first album that represents her at a calm and happy place in her life. Every album of hers I find easy to equate the mood of it to the events happening in her life at that time. This time she is finally comfortable and confident, and I imagine that as long as her marriage remains solid and happy, so will her future albums.
"If it were beneficial, their father would produce children already circumcised from their mother. Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become profitable in every respect." -Jesus, from the Gospel Of Thomas
I was flipping through a magazine and I scanned a half-page ad for the new album. If Hume was right about beauty being derived from the appropriate, then the ad's sublime, pristine, Photoshoped stuffiness is a perfect metaphor for the safest, shiniest, cleanest album she's ever written.
Or: blah.

I think she's incredibly talented and genuine in her performances but again after listening to the new one (at work against my wishes) i heard like 4 amazing songs coupled with at least twice as many painfully self indulgent ballads to depression and the like
If she would stop dwelling so much maybe she could write a balanced record but until then (if ever) she'd destined to be one of music's greatest underachievers

lol...I got into Tori, PJ Harvey, and Bjork (I remember all 3 being on the same cover of Q magazine in mid-90's...representing strong females and the future of music). Sad to say that I continue to enjoy PJ and Bjork(heck, loved the Sugarcubes in the 80's)and Tori hasn't lived up to expectation. Oh well...new female voices have taken up the slack, as I got into Stereolab, Cat Power, Beth Orton to fill the Tori void. Heck, Racheal Yamagata surprised me last year!!!

I'm basically a Tori fanatic, I think she's amazing. I think Boys for Pele is one of the best albums ever written. However, The Beekeeper is by far her weakest album in my opinion. While I do think it has some absolutely brilliant songs ('Original Sinsuality', 'Barons of Suburbia' and a few more), it's plauged with some of the worst songs of her career. The 19 songs thing is an overkill.
Actually, I recently made my own copy of the album since I was so frustrated about what a mixed bag it was. Only 9 songs remained on my version, plus the only b-side she had from the album. About 5 of those songs are essential, amazing Tori though. But the ones I didn't include, in my opinion, are pretty inexucsable.
I'll still with her forever though since I'm a huge fan and have been for years but I think she needs to regain her focus.

I have seen Tori like 6 times in concert and have all her CDs up to Venus. I think she is an incredible talent. Bells for her was never one of my fav. songs until I seen her play it live. I had great seats for the show so I was able to see what happened to her as she played the song-she became posessed. She was so lost in the song it was amazing. She was drooling all over herself-literally. I had never seen a performer give so much to a song during a live performance. But, some where along the way I lost sight of Tori. I think in part because she seemed to lose sight of herself. The albums lost their cohesiveness and she tended to breath in the the mic more than sing. Still it didn't diminish the way I feel about her. I was obsessed with her for a long time, and I ain't even gay! hahahaha I found her to be very very sensual and sexy, painfully honest, she always gave so much too her songs. Yes Anastasia is still one of my favs. Her piano playing is the best I have ever heard. She definately is a one of kind talent and one of the smartest people in Rock. I kind of feel bad that I didn't keep up with her career. I do feel that she did underachieved, ( dont tell her I said that.)
