Anyone know if this is a worthwhile album? I dig the video that I've seen and read a couple of decent write ups, but you guys haven't let me down yet, so help me out.

I've heard two or three tracks on KROQ, and I was definitely impressed.

My friend Chris recommended the Killers to me, and although I haven't listened to them yet, I can tell you that Chris is nearly always right about his recommendations. He's got a great ear for good music, since it is almost all he thinks about. His previous recommendations have turned out to be some of my favorite bands.

So on that recommendation alone I would say it's probably pretty good.

thanks a lot guys. Like I said previously, as I'm sure you all know, it's just impossible to get everything that sounds or looks interesting, so I've found this board to be a great way to narrow down my purchase choices.

Hey Dorzia,

I like the Killers record a fair bit. I got it for free, so that helps my liking it, but it's got nice hooks, a lot of synths, and good songs. It dies a little near the end, but if you like stuff that sounds like 1984, you'll like it. It's worth it, if only for the first 4 or 5 tracks.

It's become my favorite car records of the summer so far...

I'd say there's a few songs that most would find easy to like, but it's a little inconsistent. I'd recommend several albums over this one. I just happened to have covered The Killers in my recent batch of short reviews.

It’s fitting that this Las Vegas band’s debut was released first in the UK. Its main musical touchstones are all British, from Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me era Cure on “Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine” to Pulp, Blur and early 80s synth pop. Along with fellow American-Anglophilics The Faint and Stellastarr*, the British rock revival is nearly as pervasive in the States. Come to think of it, that’s not much different than all the sixties American garage bands inspired by the Beatles, Stones and Kinks. Whether The Killers will be merely another Flamin Groovies depends more on chance than the quality of their music, which is more good than inspired. Already known for flashy live shows and a charismatic leader in Brandon Flowers, The Killers seem destined for radio, with catchy ditties like “Mr. Brightside” and the moderately sweeping “All These Things That I’ve Done” with a rousing gospel chorus testifying, “I’ve got soul/But I’m not a soldier.” So far so good. But how’s this for a sharp stab in the foot – “Indie Rock And Roll” with its chorus, “It’s indie rock ‘n’ roll for me!” sung with the complete and utter pseudo-operatic conviction of a Freddy Mercury or Justin Hawkins. Coming from a band that was obviously born ready to drop its pants and whore itself out to MTV, Clearchannel and Vegas showrooms if need be, this is either knowingly delicious irony, or incredibly retarded. Best to just nod and smile, ignore the last few duds, enjoy the singles and hope for the best.

While I agree with fastnbulbous that it dies out at the end, I'm totally in agreement that it makes for great car music. Best for short trips, but nice with the windows down on a hot summer day...

I had a quick listen to it but with the exception of the single, Mr Brightside, I thought it was a bit...dull.

I think the majority sentiment on The Killers is correct. I find it hard to listen to the album in its entirety, but KEXP just played "All These Things That I've Done" and I loved it.

I suspect individual tracks are going to find their way on to my mixes this year and maybe my 2004 faves list, but the album as a whole is a bit too hit or miss.

The album is pretty average. The first 5 tracks (Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine, Mr Brightside, Smile Like You Mean It, Somebody Told Me, All These Things That I've Done) are very, very good, but unfortunatly, the rest of the album is complete indie drivle that goes nowhere.

2/5.

extremely average...

it sounds like a mixture of all the "trendy" indie bands and styles of recent date.

i would gie it a 2/5...but there are some catchy songs and a few decent singles...so...

Generic, boring indie rock, but "Mr. Brightside" is a good song.

I dig them... I don't get the backlash against this band..."Oh, they're no Modest Mouse!" Who gives a crap?? Who bent over and made Modest Freakin' Mouse the next coming??? The Killers bring a lot to the table, and Hot Fuss is a damned good album...

What I like most about the Killers is how they sound familiar. They remind me of the music that was played on the Top 40 when I was a teenager...the music from John Hughes movies.

There are some great songs on "Hot Fuss" but the album, as a whole, is a little lacking. But it's still a fun little nostalgia romp through the 80's.

I'm with you on Modest Mouse, RayRay. I'm one of those people who just doesn't get them. And I've tried, for a few years. I went and saw them a few years ago with my indie friends, who loved them, and felt nothing.

To each their own, I guess.
