There are so many reasons this is the worst movie of 2008 if not all time. But the number one reason is that during the "epic" "climactic" battle to the death, 2 "time outs" are called. This is just so freaking stupid and insane I almost threw something at the screen. How can anyone defend this? Try!
Another issue was the 2.5 hour run time. The pacing and editing were so horrible and amateurish that a 12 year old on imovie could have done a better job. A 2.5 hour movie with about 1.5 hours worth of reaction shots of kids looking around confused. The movie went a little like this: Kids magically land on beach and look around confused. Kids are in cave and look around confused. Kids are in a battle and look around confused. 2 time outs are called during battle. I look around confused.

LOL. Yeah, that's all true, but the time-outs were legit, if anticlimactic. They were part of some kind of feudal code of ethics that were alluded to prior to and (I think) during the duel. Anyway, despite the aformentioned turn-offs, if you've read the books and can appreciate the parallels in style and substance, it helps the enjoyment. I kind of respect how uncompromising the movie is. It's a kids movie that's too dark to be a kids movie, and too inane to capture an adult imagination; but it somehow very nearly succeeds as a slab of uncompromising modern "art". IMO.

So far 2008 isn't shaping up as a great movie year as 2007, but that being said, so far Chronicles of Naria: Prince Caspian is the best movie I've seen so far this year. I enjoyed the time out and I agree with Goathouse about the code of honor, ethics...there is great plausibility in this this action that took place in the midst of war. Both Naria movies contained strong personal ethical messages that most movies nowadays just omit, almost making most movies bland, contentless, action-thrillers that only seek to entertainment but never stimulate, educate, or leave one better for watching the movie.

Sequels for the matter has always been a pale comparison to it's prequel...yes there are exceptions ,(T2, Rambo, Matrix),but on a whole they fall flat. They do provide the excitement with the pro-hype releases but at the end it seems to be a wasted effort.

It was a pretty good movie for its genre, and the time-outs in battle were something different. Kind of refreshing in a way.

If you'd ever read the book, you'd understand the usage of the time-outs. Or if you'd ever read some medieval European history. Or, go'bless, you'd ever read. You CAN read, right?

*rolls eyes* You can't time-out a bar fight, those are way too chaotic. Large-scale battles are the only things you can really time-out, that and strictly codified personal combat. The last time this happened (that I can pinpoint for certain) was the Christmas truce of 1914. Doesn't really work in modern warfare, after all. Also, if you quote Narnian ethics in the middle of a bar fight, every single person in that bar has the right to beat you into a bloody pulp with pool cues. No exceptions.

um doesn't matter. no more large scale battles to begin with, and fights that happen with guns usually don't last long enough for a time out. but time outs were in the book, and you gotta give them props for at least staying to the book.
