Disappointed to see that this guy doesn't already have his own thread. I'm not normally a huge fan of old-time folk-blues stuff, but this guy is fantastic. Dude is singlehandedly bringing back early 20th-century folk music with his banjo and his whiskey-soaked voice. He's only 29 years old but he sounds like he's 60. Love that voice. Every one of his album and both of his EPs are excellent. I've heard that he puts on an incredible concert as well. Anyone else into this guy?

i saw him a couple of years ago at an in-store show at lou's records in solana beach. very good live for what he did. a couple of my friends are obsessed with him, i wouldn't go that far, but i am an admirer. i may be mistaken, but i think he is a farmer in addition to a musician. he was a really nice guy, and hung out afterwards for a while talking to us.

I only have song of the Blackbird, but I love it.
Which albums should I get next?

I'd say get Hymns of the Hopeless next. It's right up there with Song of the Blackbird.

Also, the two EPs he's released, Latitudes and Hallways of Always (the latter with Jenny Hoyston) are fantastic.

I feel like Ashes to Dust though it has an incredible opening song in "Midnight," was something of an off album for WEW.

i've listened to the first half of Hymns for the HOpeless and i'm very impressed. His voice is amazing and he's not even 30?!? wow!

i wish sam amidon had a voice closer to this one to sing his bluegrass rather than his high pitched one

thanx for the rec RL

Perhaps even more amazing is the fact that when he recorded Hymns for the Hopeless he had to have been 23 or 24 years old. Unbelievable.

Anyways, I'm glad you like it, Brain! It always makes me feel good to know that I've in some way, however small, enhanced the life of a fellow human being.

I'm also a big Whitmore fan. He's a very unappreciated talent and I am surprised more people haven't caught on to him (especially Tom Waits and Johnny Cash fans). Seems like he hasn't released an album in awhile, is there a new one in the works?
