The Snake the Cross the Crown

I can't say how much I love their last release, Cotton Teeth. It may be my #1 album of the year at this point. They're not very traditional sounding, but they're definitely in the Americana genre, and I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a better collection of Americana songs than on Cotton Teeth. I don't think anyone else here has heard them, but if you like Americana, you should do yourself a favor and check these guys out.

I think you mentioned them earlier, because I just went to check them out again and realized I have a few MP3s already. I don't know if I actually ever got a chance to listen to them, but these tracks are amazing. I'm going to shoot it to my Amazon wish list so I don't forget about them again.

I love Behold the River.

One band that I discovered this year and proceeded to pick up their entire back catalog is Dolorean. Their record from this year, You Can't Win is exceptional and will probably land in my top 15, but I think my favorite is Violence in the Snowy Fields from 2004. It is a little more upbeat, so if you like your alt-country a little more downtrodden pick up the new one.

Listened to The Snake the Cross the Crown at their Myspace and it was very nice. Thanks for the notice on that one, RL.

Haven't the new Dolorean yet, but I also like Violence in the Snowy Fields. It's a gorgeous album, as is their debut, Not Exotic.

I love this thread! I've been a folk/americana fan for three years now but have been hard pressed to find things that rivaled Iron&Wine, to the point where i was starting to wonder if there was anything remotely like it. and then comes along RavingLunatic and his vast knowledge in the genre. Thanx RL :thumbs up:

The Snake the Cross The Crown singer really sounds like someone I recognize in the song Cotton Teeth. I just realized it's Ounsworth (or whatever) from Clap You Hands...

Just commenting. It's also a great song though.

Haha. Thanks dude. I wouldn't call my knowledge of the genre vast, but I do my best. Big Grin

Great, I hope you like Cotton Teeth as much as I do.

Also, though I've always found Dolorean a bit too plain for my tastes, I think the new album is their best, and I like it.

Hey I know Grampall Jookabox, they're a regional band from Indianapolis. They've played in town a few times. And they are pretty darn good.

"Lea Valley Delta Blues" by Morning Bride is my biggest recommendation of late. Some great influences here: John Doe, Johnny Cash, Neko Case, Dusty Springfield. Or think Belle & Sebastian meets Paula Frazier & Tarnation.

Recently saw the Felice Brothers open for Bright Eyes in concert. This is not my usual genre, but I really loved them. Swamp rock/Americana. A little zydeco, a little stomp, a lot of Dylan and the Band. They have a vinyl out, but I bought their tour-only CD. If you stumble across them at all, I'd check it out. Their live show was more dynamic, since it all seemed like something out of Bukowski in the Big Easy, but the recording does them proper justice.

Somebody here had him placed pretty high on their list, but though I've been meaning to check him out, I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I've been listening to this album by Doug Burr called On Promenade lately, and it's really impressing me. I'll have to give it a few more listens, but it's sounding outstanding so far. Has quite a bit of banjo with some of the songs sounding more traditional and others more like modern singer-songwriters. Makes great use of occasional vocal harmonizing and instrumental effects. Just all-around excellent, and I'd recommend it to just about anyone.

I've just run across a pretty nifty 2007 release. It's by the Cave Singers and it's called Invitation Songs. It's a super-group of sorts. Made up of guys from Hint Hint, Cobra High and Pretty Girls Make Graves. This sounds nothing like any of those bands. There was a quote on the promo I received that sums up their sound better than I ever could. It's from The Seattle Weekly:

quote:
An updated version of the Anthology of American Folk Music. Not the graduate-student, learned interpretations of folk music circa 1962, but folk music approached by way of punk rock. It's sparse, melodic, and simultaneously creepy and alluring, like the widow mourning graveside in Johnny Cash's "Long Black Veil."

I've heard that one, Jack, and liked it pretty well. It didn't blow me away like some other albums have this year, but it's a solid album of quality folk songs. I'll try to give it some more listens before the year's up.

I'm not convinced the entire album is great, but there are some definite high points. "Seeds of Night" is absolutely stellar.
