They're a bit too unmitigatedly joyful for my taste, but I know a lot of people are crazy abou them. Apparently they're new album is being produced by Rick Rubin, who is apparently notorious for overproducing albums.

north carolina! (come on and raise up?) i'm not as crazy about them as all my friends seem to be (same story with ryan adams), but emotionalism was very solid. sorry, i hate overuse of parentheses.

They are a great band and one of the best live acts out there. I really enjoyed "Emotionalism" though I fear that they are getting away from their Southern roots and delving more into straight rock music.
I went to one of their shows recently and they played a few tracks from the new album. Hint: Less banjo and guitar, more piano and drums. Could be cool, could be a disaster. Hopefully Rubin doesn't butcher this...
It ain't hallelujah, but it might as well have been.

That's not good news. This band isn't quite the same without the banjo.

Yep, just Scott and Seth Avett strumming away on guitars, just like The Gleam I. I think that's always the plan with their EPs...to go with just guitars.
I definitely think "Murder in the City" is the highlight, though none of the songs are badly written. I just wonder if they are ever going to release another song like "I Killed Sally's Lover" now that they seem to be moving away from that sound. It was the bluegrass sound that drew me to the Avetts and it would be a shame to lose that entirely.
