Thank you. Lists are the most practical way to quickly ascertain what's out there in the genres one is less familiar with.

So, people, if you want to turn people on to your favorite underrated albums... PUT 'EM IN A LIST!

Jus' do it.

I'll give it a shot, although the line between Folk/American and other genres seems pretty blurred:

1. Todd Snider - Peace Queer EP
2. Okkervil River - The Stand Ins
3. Peter Broderick - Home
4. Drive-By Truckers - Brighter than Creation's Dark
5. Langhorne Slim - s/t
6. Frontier Ruckus - The Orion Songbook
7. Dar Williams - Promised Land
8. Tallest Man on Earth - Shallow Grave
9. Tyler Ramsey - A Long Dream About Swimming Across the Sea
10. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
11. Breathe Owl Breathe - Ghost Glacier EP
12. Plants and Animals - Parc Avenue
13. Blue Giant - Target Heart
14. William Fitzsimmons - The Sparrow and the Crow
15. Horse Feathers - House With No Home
16. Old Crow Medicine Show - Tennessee Pusher
17. The Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride
18. The War on Drugs - Wagonwheel Blues
19. Ani Difranco - Red Letter Year
20. Port O'Brian - All We Could Do Was Sing
21. Blind Pilot - 3 Rounds and a Sound
22. Ane Brun - Changing of the Seasons
23. Ron Sexsmith - Exit Strategy for the Soul

I love The Rural Alberta Advantage and The Gaslight Anthem, but I would hesitate to call them Folk or Americana. They would probably be #1 and 2 on this list.

I think this has been a very good year for the genre.

I'll join the party!

01. William Fitzsimmons - The Sparrow and the Crow
02. Gregory and the Hawk - Moenie and Kitchi
03. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
04. Langhorne Slim - Langhorne Slim
05. The Accidental - There Were Wolves
06. Sun Kil Moon - April
07. Horse Feathers - House With No Home
08. Blitzen Trapper - Furr
09. Okkervil River - The Stand-Ins
10. Peter Broderick - Home
11. The Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride
12. The Tallest Man on Earth - Shallow Grave
13. Drive-By Truckers - Brighter than Creation's Dark

*If I interpreted Plants and Animals or Fleet Foxes "folk/americana" like goathouse or FoT, then they'd both be top 3 for me.

I definitely don't listen to as much folk as some of you, so my list is a bit thin, but I realized while making this list how much more folk I've listened to this year, and how great a year it has been for the genre.

I did try the Fitzsimmons, ANinBC, and sorry, but I couldn't get into it. That said, I really like your list. Outside of your #1 I really dig everything else on it that I've heard. I'm gonna have to check out that Gregory and the Hawk album.

Hey, that's alright RL.

And I've been meaning to listen to Jon Foreman, I kinda forgot about him, but your inclusion of him on your list has now reminded me to go do that.

On this site, I can never tell if someone mentioning that Pitchfork likes an album is a compliment or an insult.

I'll take it as a compliment.

I'll admit that while I was growing to like it before, the p4k review shored it up for me and helped it to secure a spot on my list. So yeah... a good thing in this case.

It's one of the best albums of the year, there's no denying. Not to pat myself on the sack, but I was in love with this album before it even existed in any form. That's...

...how badass my slinky-lookin' zeitgeist antennae are.

i guess indie folk would be a fair call, i hear a bit of Cat Power, Rilo Kiley and also PJ Harvey (the lead vocal is female). Its a short album with no filler. Gillian Welch and David Rawling do a little cameo

the songs on their myspace give a good idea of the vibe of the album

I really like the new J. Tillman album but am counting it as a 2009 release, since that's the official release date. Even though is available via eMusic, its listed as an "Advance" release.

Seagull - Goodbye Weather
My latest winter album addiction. They're described as "a lo-fi slice of melodic, pastoral folk pop, with the occasional electronic fluctuation, and at times moving towards youthful, angular, guitar workouts", which is pretty accurate. Might just be one of the last albums of the year making a strong run towards the top of my year end list.

It's a 2009 release for me as well. That's when the physical release is coming out. Don't worry, I'm saving it for next year, BoP! It'll give me a good head start on 2009, heehee.
