You might like Jim White's latest album, Transformal Skiperoo. He does the drumming for Nina Nastasia and a few other groups, but he's got a pretty impressive solo career on his own. Skiperoo isn't his best album, but it's a good starting point.

I've kind of been avoiding Jim White's stuff because I loved everything about the latest Nina Nastasia album except the drums. The drumming was fucking awful and ruined about two-thirds of the songs. He was trying a little too hard if you ask me.

I would second the Jim White recommendation. His earlier albums are great too, Drill A Hole In That Substrate and No Such Place.

Note that the alt-country singer-songwriter Jim White described above is a different person than the drummer Jim White, who collaborated last year with Nina Nastasia and drums in the Dirty Three. RL, I'd give the singer-songwriter Jim White a listen if you've been avoiding his work because of the drumming Jim White Smiler
