I've been listening almost exclusively to 60s/70s singer-songwriters lately, and thought I'd open up a thread to talk about them.
Some of my favorites:
Randy Newman Lee Hazlewood Harry Nilsson Serge Gainsbourg (fairly new to me, but already firmly established as a favorite.) and I can't pass up an opportunity to plug my newest obsession again. David Ackles. His three albums from Elektra are as good as any singer/songwriter albums I've ever heard. If not for his limited output, I'd say he was as good as Randy Newman.
I also am a big fan of Paul Simon, especially the Simon and Garfunkel albums. I sort of feel bad for Simon, because it seems like he gets less respect than other similar artists because he has sold so many records. I think 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' is still one of the best pop albums ever made, and hear its influence all over the place. Of course, then I think about him in his giant house, with his millions of dollars, and I don't feel as bad for him.
