Just picked up one of Jimmy Scott's later-in-life albums and am really enjoying it. He's an interesting character with an even more interesting voice. I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on where to go next, especially with his early recordings, since it seems like a lot of his stuff from that period is out of print.

When you listed the Jimmy Scott CD the other day, klt, I was wondering what you would think of it.

I have to confess, I've never really explored Scott's catalog to any depth. I think, though, my friend DBJ has. Let me get with him and find out what he has to say. Maybe you and I can dig into the back catalog together.

Now Playing: The White Sox hosting the Yankees on WGN

I'm not a huge Jimmy Scott fan, but I'm wondering if anyone has heard the legendary LP (now CD) he recorded for Ray Charles' Tangerine label in the early 1960s.

When Charles moved from Atlantic Records to ABC-Paramount he received his own imprint at the latter label and named it Tangerine. Scott recorded this reportedly legendary LP on Tangerine and for some reason, the LP was never released and had a cult reputation. It finally was released on CD a few years ago, but I've never hear it. Is it as good as advertised?

Falling in Love is Wonderful

It's funny you ask, CFA, because it's the album I ended up settling on when I told klt I was going to dig into Scott's back catalog.

Truthfully, I'd never heard of it before, so I can't speak to its legendary status, but I can say that the couple of glowing reviews I've read of it since I've been listening don't do it justice. It's a really extraordinary record. The band is top notch and even though I'm biased in favor of Paitch and Wilson as arrangers, I would defy anybody to recognize the arrangements as anything other than excellent. Scott's interpretations are uniformly lovely and and rich with nuance.

Rush right out and get a copy. It's as wonderful as falling in love.

Now Playing: "Seventy-Four Seventy-Five" Shearwater Palo Santo

I have a friend who's a huge fan and I've borrowed a few discs from him. I found it to be a very trippy and surreal experience listening to him! Standard jazz but such a unique voice!
