It warms my heart to see Illinois Jacquet described as a "jazz great." Jacquet is one of a great number of jazz musicians who were never well known out of jazz circles, but whose music has great appeal to even the casual listener. That, combined, with his sincere and affable manner sometimes caused purists to deride his talent, skills, and contributions to the music. Too bad. Their loss.
