I picked up volumes 1 and 3 of this series of early Louis Armstrong recordings. I had always heard that they were very good albums, but I like them even more than I thought I would. I think I prefer vol. 3 to vol. 1, but only slightly. Now all I have to do is track down vol. 2. My only complaint is that the liner notes are pretty bland, although I'm finding that to be a trend in the small amount of jazz that I have in my collection.
Yeah man- I love that era of Armstrong! If you dig them- I highly recommend you checking out some Sidney Bechet. He was one of the few early jazz soloists that was on par with Armstrong- and some of the only jazz from that era I still listen to all the time. I like his later Blue Note stuff (from the 40s and 50s,) but his style never really changed that much.
Take it easy... ...but take it
