Steve Lacy, 69, Who Popularized the Soprano Saxophone, Dies

For all the fact that he was pretty much the sole proponent of the soprano saxophone after Sidney Bechet and before John Coltrane, and worked with Thelonious Monk (albeit briefly), Lacy was not well known outside of jazz circles. He lived much of his life in Europe and recorded for overseas labels that can be harder to track down outside of specialty stores, but his outstanding early recording of Monk compositions, Reflections (OJC), is generally easy to track down and worth many a listen.

Now Playing: "Four In One" Steve Lacy _Reflections_ (OJC)
