Maybe I could also add to that, do you put any stock in a "10" from Pitchfork?
Yes. As always, the answer is on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitchfork_Media * ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Source Tags & Codes * 12 Rods - Gay? * Bonnie "Prince" Billy - I See a Darkness * The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin * Radiohead - Kid A * Radiohead - OK Computer * Amon Tobin - Bricolage * Walt Mink - El Producto * Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot The list of 10's upon rerelease is much longer so I won't copy it. I'm not familiar with 12 Rods or Walt Mink; I'm sure someone has an opinion on their worthiness here. If I were listing the 9 best albums of the Pitchfork Era, this would not be my list, nor would it be theirs. But I think both Radioheads, YHF, and Soft Bulletin belong at least. And Bricolage, like just about everything Amon Tobin does, is really, really good. So while you can't necessarily trust their ratings from before 2000 (because then, the ratings were just Schreiber's way of telling you how much he liked a particular album), I'd say they're worth putting stock in.

You ask and you receive. Thanks. I would also be curious to know if there's a list like that of the 5/5 reviews from Tiny Mix Tapes. I seared Wikipedia but found nothing. I've probably frequented their site as long, if not longer, than Pitchfork. Thanks again..

TMT gives out two or three 5/5's a day so that'd be a huge list.

Yeah, no exaggeration there. That's exactly what they do. That's why there's not one 5/5 in the new reviews list here (as of 03/10/2006). Two 4.5/5 but no 5s. But, yeah, it's all 5/5s from those pricks. I mean, it is such a meaningful statistic.

Okay, a bit of an exaggeration, but you have to admit that TMT does hand out a lot of perfect scores, especially when compared to other publications. I quickly went though TMTs reviews and found over a dozen 5/5's just in the "A"'s.

It's a major exxageration. We actually hand them out more like one every other day or so (1 out of 10), if that. We're very aware that some people care about rating so we purposely spread them out. In any case, ratings are totally pointless and arbitrary. I've gave 5s to a few albums back when I just started that I totally wouldn't have given now.

I don't think it's that people necessarily "care" about ratings, but it's hard to take a critical publication seriously when they're heaping praise on albums left and right. I have the same problem with Rolling Stone.

Because all music sucks now or what? I dunno, one of the main reasons I write is to encourage the music I know and love while occasionally warning against those I find fault with.

I believe that "encouragement" is behind why we all write, when we write. Although I understand that some would rather discourage.

The thing about TMT's abundance of perfect scores that annoys me is that it completely lightens any impact it would have had if they were given out rarely. If i see two 5/5's a week, I don't care about them. You may not think ratings matter, but I think the reason they do is specifically to punch the importance of those 5/5 albums or the 0/5 ones. I don't really research the albums TMT give high scores, which may be due to the abundance of them, or it may be that I don't really get a credible feeling from TMT (partially due to the absolutely ridiculous amount of dumb, jokey news headlines and stories which often make it really difficult to figure out what the hell they are trying to say). Pitchfork, on the other hand, gives 10's out so rarely that they actually seem to send a little indy ripple through the music community. I mean, even 9.2's are kind of a big deal.

No, not all music sucks now, but as an avid music listener, there's a very small number of albums released every year that I think are flawless, so it sort of baffles me when I see totally mediocre albums getting 4 & 5 ratings. It further baffles me when I read a review for a 5/5 album, and I can even get a sense of why the reviewer thinks it's so great, like this review for Andrew W.K.'s The Wolf. All I got from it is the sense that Andrew W.K. kicks ass and will make me do jump kicks. It looks like it was written by a 13 year old.

Well this list is pretty much a clue to steer away whenever Pitchfork lays a 10 on anything.

I dunno about that. I thik most people agree with the two Radiohead albums and the Wilco album being there. The Flaming Lips and and Bonnie Prince Billy albums are darn good, even if they may not be perfect 10's in my book. The Trail of Dead album is a bit of an oddity. It's a pretty decent album, but I don't know too many people who would rate it a 10. As for the others, I know very little about them, so I can't really comment. The Reissues they've rated as 10s are usually pretty deserving. I can't really argue with Loaded, London Calling, This Year's Model, and many of the others getting 10s. Most of those are classic albums in just about anybody's book.

Good for you, then. Enjoy. By the way, Vice gave 4 albums a 10 out of 10 this month, including the Arctic Monkeys which TMT gave a 2/5.

OK. Presumably this means that TMT is better than Vice. Killer. At least you got to shit on the Arctic Monkeys, which I personally think was much closer to a 10 than a 2/5. Pointing out that someone who writes for your publication thinks a particular album sucks doesn't really affect how I feel about it.
