Am I the only one in the Andorra>Person Pitch camp? I just can't get into it, just like I couldn't get into Brian Wilson. It just doesn't have any hooks to hold onto, and I'm not the biggest fan of 10+ minutes of music in any genre. Thankfully, Friar assured me that I'm not faulty as a person. Razzer

But I do think you're faulty. Wink

I like Andorra a lot too. But treading new ground vs. old ground sort of helps Person Pitch in terms of musical importance.

I feel I have a very good understanding of Pitchfork's collective taste in music, but I was very surprised that Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters and, even more so, Random Spirit Lover did not crack the top 50 (I guessed it would be in the twenties).

It's weird... I seem to "get" all the music that is most divisive and seen as most challenging around here, but the one band I cannot "get" is Spoon. I mean, I think their new album is top 50-worthy (I think I had it in the 40s on my list), but I can't see it as a top ten album made this year. I'm willing to keep trying, though because I want to love as much music as I possibly can.

Since everyone else is doing it, I predicted:
1. Person Pitch (0)
2. Sound of Silver (0)
3. Strawberry Jam (+3)
4. Kala (-1)
5. In Rainbows (-1)
6. Mirrored (+2)
7. From Here We Go Sublime (+2)
8. Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer (-3)
9. Boxer (+8)
10.Night Falls over Kortedala (+1)

No, I agree with you that Andorra is better than Person Pitch. I also think that Five Roses is better than both of them.

All those neurons firing means a lot of different tastes in music. Do you like Comfy in Nautica? That was the first song I really liked a lot.

Comfy in Nautica is the best of the bunch. It seems overly long to me, but it is the most melodic on the album.

No, you lose because you didn’t correctly spell number 10's name. Sorry—we do have some nice parting gifts though—is a toaster OK?

By the way, O’Doyle rules.

Person Pitch is such an obvious number one for me. It's filled with ubearably beautiful hooks and melodies. Bros is an undeniable masterpiece and one of the best songs of this decade. Andorra is a bit watery I think especially if you compare it with Up in Flames, Caribou's best album so far.

I concede and gratefully accept the toaster. When can I expect it in the mail?

On a seperate issue, it seems apparent now that Sound of Silver has swept away all competition in the 2007 Best 50 lists. I don't think there has been another year when the praise for one album has been so unanimous. I think it'll top the praise for Illinois in 2005.

Both Sound of Silver and In Rainbows have 4 #1's according to the metacritic Best Albums of 2007 page. Both appear in about the same number of top 10's too. I think there's still more lists to be added though, there's a lot less than on the 2006 page. Hopefully some more variance...

The Guardian (UK) readers poll is up.

I think the lists should appeal to a great many here at m/c.

RE: the guardian list, There was someone commenting on a perceived "increasing consensus" among critics, thus there are a few left field albums that seem to appear in every end of year poll this year. What do people think of this?

didn't care much for the AV Club's list, but they're still one of my favorite review sites!

I voted in the Guardian Readers Poll -- I am moderately pleased with the results and glad to see Rufus was on the solo artist list, since he released the year's best album ( Eeker), did a great tour where he played for 2.5 hours, AND did his Judy Garland thing, which was a mixed success but was certainly audacious.

Wow, I just lost some respect for Popmatters. Lyle Lovett? The Fratellis? Seriously, what a lame, trendy list. Try again next year, guys.

What about the voice of Geddy Lee? How did he get so high?

On the other hand, considering what little respect RS commands in these parts (and, usually, rightfully so), I was surprised just how in touch their top 15 to 20 were with the critical zeitgeist. Their list is not so very different from, say, the AVClub.

What's so lame and trendy about it?

Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem, Arcade Fire, National, MIA in the top ten. Of Montreal, Battles, Person Pitch, Spoon, The Good the Bad and The Queen, The Shins, The Field, Patrick Wolf, Jens Lekman, Feist, Patti Griffin, Okkervil River, El-P, Caribou, Animal Collective, Wilco elsewhere on the list.

Looks rather like the Metacritic users composite list to me.
