I'm a bit disappointed with the predictability factor in pitchfork's top 10 list. Usually there are a few albums that went under my radar during the year that land in the top 10... (like scott walker and liars)

some thoughts of mine:
"person pitch" is a great album... i can see top 10. but #1 of the year? really?

"boxer" at 17... travesty. this was far and above my favorite album of the year.

nice to see tough alliance and sally shapiro make the list.

i am a huge huge ghostface fan... but i don't find "big doe rehab" to be a standout.

WHERE THE FUCK IS MENOMENA?!?!?!

I actually really like the devil’s website’s list. The only problem I had with it was the Sunset Rubdown omission—not even in the top 50? I did like the top ten a lot as they are one of the few publications to have Of Montreal in their top ten. I only though The National and Okkervil River were too low and I really like where Burial is. I also love that Noah’s album got the top spot. I haven’t checked the individual lists yet but as for the overall list, it’s one of my favorite lists of the year—that’s saying a lot, considering how often I put them down.

I've never heard Person Pitch from start to finish. But I was not at all impressed by the individual tracks I've checked.

Also, I was in a worn out mood last night, and went to the store and bought LCD Soundsystem's newest on a whim because it's high on everyone's lists. I can respect it more now, I still don't think it's that amazing.

I think the only things in Pitchforks top ten that I can really agree with are Spoon and Battles. And those aren't even in my top ten.

I usually agree with Pitchfork more than any other publication, but this year, they have rocked my boat of trust.

But, like others have said before. There's a lot of good music that was released this year, and people should enjoy the freedom of being picky. I love that so many of these lists are vastly different.

I think Pitchfork's list is pretty good. I love Person Pitch -- just a gorgeous, warm, human album. There are omissions and rankings I disagree with, and as usual there is Pitchfork's penchant for finding and praising unusual stuff to look cool, but every magazine and website has its annoying biases and blind spots.

Totally agree. I mean, yeah my top 20 albums are all pretty unusual albums, but it's not like I actually enjoy them or anything, I just love looking cool!

What the hell is with pitchforks number 50. Did they even review that album?

And yes, no sunset rubdown makes me sad too.

My prediction for pitchfork's list held up pretty well:
1: The Field ACTUALLY #9
2: MIA ACTUALLY #3
3: Panda Bear ACTUALLY #1
4: Deerhunter ACTUALLY #14
5: Battles ACTUALLY #8
6: Animal Collective WAS #6
7: Sunset Rubdown DID NOT MAKE LIST
8: Kanye West ACTUALLY #18
9: Radiohead ACTUALLY #4
10: Lil Wayne ACTUALLY #16

So, yes, I would agree that it was pretty predictable.

01 - Random Spirit Lover
02 - Boxer
03 - Sound of Silver
04 - Person Pitch
05 - Kala
06 - The Stage Names
07 - Mirrored
08 - Hissing Fauna...
09 - In Rainbows
10 - Strawberry Jam

Erase my #1 and #2 and you have a pretty damn good approximation of the Pitchfork list. I don't think being predictable is so bad when you're basically irrefutably correct. Wink

And when you have precise scores for every album you review.

I was thrilled to see Hissing Fauna so high. Also, I'm pretty happy for Panda Bear to get the top spot - I thought "Sound of Silver" might have the lock on that spot, and I only liked about half of it. Three out of my five guesses for their top five made it, and a fourth ended up at #6.

(for the record, my guesses for the top 5 were Sound of Silver, Person Pitch, Graduation, Kala and Strawberry Jam.)

I do wish The National would have been higher but Spoon and Of Montreal showing up so high made up for it.

Yeah, it was kind of predictable.

But I love their top 10. I'll have 5 or 6 of them on my list. I was happy to see Panda Bear at the top, that was sort of unexpected. (I thought it would be either LCD or M.I.A., or maybe the Field.)

I can't believe Sunset Rubdown didn't make the cut...especially since it got in the mid 8s, didn't it?

I reckon it's a fairly decent list, although I would've liked Stage Names to be higher. Glad to see Gagagagaga, Hissing Fauna, Kala and Sound of Silver so high. Not so sure about Person Pitch at #1...I'll have to give it some more listens and try and convince myself that Good Girl/Carrots is any good. And I'll have to find some time to check out Battles and the Field, the ones in the top 10 I haven't heard, before the new year rolls around and the new releases start flowing.

I enjoy reading the individual lists more so than the definitive list. I kept stumbling across Sir Richard Bishop. Anyone heard of him?

I'm pretty sure I saw him open for Joanna Newsom last year. He was... interesting. Definitely freak-folk, some very good guitar but the lyrics were odd.

I saw him live in Australia couple years back.
Played acoustic and hit a few random objects.
He was focused, melodic, abrasive and unique to my ears.
A significant talent. He'll never be on the cover of Rolling Stone; his work is too odd and genre-defying, but if you like adventurous guitarists, he's worth a listen.

Oh, could I feel as I have felt, or be what I have been,
Or weep as I could once have wept, o'er many a vanished scene;
As springs in deserts found seem sweet, all brackish though they be,
So, midst the withered waste of life, those tears would flow to me.

The top 10 is cash money except for the lack of Boxer. MadBut I'm glad that Hissing Fauna got some props as did Les Savy Fav further down on the list.

After seeing P4k's list, I listened to Person Pitch again. I don't get it. Sure, the album is "gorgeous, warm and human", but it's redundant and boring. I've really tried to like this album. I've listened to it a dozen times or more.

I guess I'm going to have to agree to disagree with P4k and many people on these boards.

When Person Pitch first came out last spring I couldn't figure out why it was such a critical darling. I listened to it a lot and never got it. I kept on listening to it and eventually I couldn't stop playing it. You don't need to keep on trying. Maybe you will never "get it." That doesn't mean you are faulty as a human. All those neurons firing means a lot of different tastes in music. Do you like Comfy in Nautica? That was the first song I really liked a lot.
