I was very pleased by Pitchfork's top songs of 2007. It is an interesting list though I was confused at some points. Firstly, I think it could be more songs by the National and Panda Bear here. And then, some picks are daringly offensive, such as Rihanna at the 5th or Atlas at the second place, but i know that every list of this kind has to be unique so I don't care much.

Looking at the individual staff lists, Atlas at #2 is very confusing. For every time Atlas was on a list, Umbrella was on one higher and was actually on more lists, had two #1s (the highest Atlas had was #3), and 9 top 10s to Atlas's 4.
Based on the individual lists, I would have expected All My Friends and Someone Great to be #1 and #2. I'd say if Pitchfork changed anything from the staff lists to make the final list, it would have been to move Umbrella down a bit. Or maybe they really did just want Atlas at #2.
As a side note, Ryan Schreiber's top songs list is quite close to my own...
I was browsing the guest artists lists on P4k, and I was intrigued by a lot of Annie Clark aka St Vincent's list. I loved her and her album (which is high on my year end list) already, but her selections made me appreciate her all the more. I'll be seeking a few of them out.

Anywho, with 2 sound of silver tracks in the top 10, I'm thinking they might be giving #1 album to LCD Soundsystem.
That's the impression I got from the list, too. LCD is the big frontrunner now, in my mind.
Agree to disagree on The Shins' song, though. I love that riff.
(Oh yeah, and only one Radiohead song? And it was "All I Need"? Seriously?)

P.S. Why was their no folk genre for the genre specific lists? Two country categories, a jazz category and no folk. I mean c'mon people...
I'm pretty sure an Americana list is still coming. Plus, they also had a singer-songwriter list. They also did a feature on roots music in 2007 that was pretty good on Monday of last week. That's way more space than roots stuff is going to get anywhere else short of no depression magazine.

Do you have any good reason for thinking that popmatters is creating a pop-country list in order to increase ad revenue? They've always reviewed a lot of mainstream country. My feeling is that they have several writers who like mainstream country who wanted to make a list. I don't see why we should assume bad intentions on their part. I will see that I don't get the critical love for that Miranda Lambert album at all. I don't get what sets it apart from other similar albums.
Posted by jonathanbrisby Hey you KNOW I read WIRE Ishy. They haven't published the year-end issue yet. The December issue has Pram on the cover. I think the January issue is generally when they do the Year End Rewind.
I was hoping you would pop your head up mate. Just wanted to be sure someone would fill me in come the time. Thanks.
Oh, and those who would hate Lyle Lovett; listen again closely to his new album and you will hear different tensions, different hearts from previous albums. Anyway, to dismiss his work superficially on sound is akin to tossing out half of Duke Ellington's early work cause he was following a formula a.k.a shtick. You know I'm looking your way Eric.

Well said. Lyle Lovett really hasn't released a bad album yet, so I have little doubt that the new one is good. He's one of the better songwriters of the last 25 years to my mind. I still haven't had a chance to see him live, but I hear he puts on a fantastic show.

a few surprise choices/omissions, but for the most part nothing too shocking (especially in the top 10 - very predictable). that being said, this could have been a lot worse.
i'm not a huge pitchfork basher, but they always seem to elicit people's rancor. so, let the bashing begin...

OH YES! Pitchfork's list is just wonderful this time IMO. The biggest fault of the list is that the National is only at 17. But regarding the fact they didn't even mentioned excellent Alligator in their 2005 year-end it seems to be OK. I'm happy to see Strawberry Jam and Hissing Fauna in the top 10. Okkervil River's effort is pretty high too. The second and the third picks were quite predictable but that's the NUMBER ONE I've been waiting the whole 2007!!

Just glancing through the individual lists, they are extremely varied. Aside from a lot of votes for LCD and Panda Bear, there didn't seem to much of a consencus on anything else. I guess that means there was lot of good records this year?

I will always believe that Pitchfork is too concerned with cutting edge music and tends to skip over albums by established artists hoping to discover the next big thing. I am pleased with the inclusion of Bon Iver and Iron and Wine, but Pitchfork didn't even review most of my favorite albums of 2007, so I didn't expect much from their year end list.
Also there are a lot of albums, especially rap, that I haven't seen on may lists here that were quite high on P-forks year end list.

I agree, they're pretty caught up in being trendy. there were a few albums I couldn't believe made it on the list, and my #1 never even made an appearance.
I was kind of disappointed to see Boxer at #17 as well - I thought it would be in their top 10. What definitely bugged me more was that there was no Sunset Rubdown. I mean, wasn't Shut Up I Am Dreaming in their top 20 last year? Oh well, I didn't really expect to agree with Pitchfork anyways, but it was nice to see some albums in their top 10 that are also in mine (Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, Hissing Fauna, Strawberry Jam, and In Rainbows).
