I've got to say, that MTV list is confusing, as is their songs list. Now, I've never watched MTV, but I am relatively familiar with MuchMusic in Canada, and for the sake of argument, I'll assume that they're fairly similar. So, they spend their time telling (by means of what they play) the general public that the music that really matters right now is Rhianna, Plain White T's and Fall Out Boy, but when you ask them what the best music of the year actually was, they'll tell you something completely different. If they know that the music that's popular is generally crap and list a whole bunch of albums and songs that their viewers won't have heard of as the best of the year, isn't there a problem? This is absolutely baffling to me.
I've only heard the more trumpeted albums this year...Arcade Fire, Feist, Radiohead, Wilco etc. And a smattering of stuff like LCD Soundsystem and Caribou. I'm barely in a position to formulate a Top 10 list, honestly.
BUT...I am pretty surprised that Crowded House's "Time On Earth" is not mentioned ANYWHERE in these lists. It had a MC score of 78, and was one of the boldies for a while. Lots of good reviews, many saying it easily tops out the list of recent comeback albums. Especially considering someone like Nick Lowe made it onto several lists, as well as the D Jr. comeback album.
While I love the album, I admit it might not belong in the top 10 of the year. But top 25? Definitely.

There's a difference between what's easy to sell and gets ratings and what the people who work there actually enjoy, I'd imagine.

I missed this when you posted it and stumbled across it today. Typically, Heather Phares and I have much in common. And surprisingly, I don't hate Stephen Thomas Erelewine's list

Great to see Nick Lowe getting recognition with his golden late career run, and the very lovely Cherry Ghost
My pleasure. I'm really enjoying Thirst For Romance which I just got last week, and the list made me want to check out Nick Lowe and Laura Veirs too. Also need to get Lady's Bridge... not enough time to listen to all this music! I vote for the introduction of an eight day week, and a 36 hour day...

I don't entirely understand what you mean... there was no order, just a page with 10 CDs on it... if you want to rate them by the order in which I've typed them in, be my guest, but it'll be completely arbitrary.

Pitchfork top songs of 2007 list is up. Pretty good, I suppose: 1234, Past Grotesque, Someone Great, All My Friends, Paper Planes, Bros all in the top 20. For some reason the most boring song on Wincing the Night Away (Turn on me) makes an appearance at 71, and no others.
Anywho, with 2 sound of silver tracks in the top 10, I'm thinking they might be giving #1 album to LCD Soundsystem.
I am second to none in my fondness for Nick Lowe -- I own pretty much everything he has done, and I have loved most of his solo albums. But At My Age was a big bore.
Popmatters have released their top 60 albums of 2007. Here is the link. The top 20 are:
1. Radiohead - In Rainbows 2. Miranda Lambert - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend 3. LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver 4. Kanye West - Graduation 5. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible 6. Lyle Lovett and his Large Band - It's Not Big, It's Large 7. The National - Boxer 8. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black 9. The Fratellis - Costello Music 10. M.I.A. - Kala 11. Mavis Staples - We'll Never Turn Back 12. Josh Ritter - The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter 13. Mike Farris - Salvation in Lights 14. The Good, the Bad & the Queen - S/T 15. Ha Ha Tonka - Buckle in the Bible Belt 16. Talib Kweli - Ear Drum 17. The Avett Brothers - Emotionalism 18. Rahsaan Patterson - Wines and Spirits 19. Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga 20. Meshell Ndegeocello - The World Has Made Me the Man of My Dreams

Man, the Popmatters list freakin' sucks this year. I think they made my favorite list last year. This year it's dominated by shitty major label music, including way too much mainstream, radio-friendly country music. Big disappointment.

I feel conflicted about PopMatters' 2007 best albums list. On the one hand, releases from The Avett Brothers, Spoon, and even Ha Ha Tonka have been excellent. Yet there were also some serious missteps like The Good, the Bad, & the Queen and Lyle Lovett. I find the Radiohead #1 boring. Also what happened to Ike Reilly on their list? I thought they loved the guy. Well maybe next year PopMatters and I will see eye-to-eye.
P.S. Why was their no folk genre for the genre specific lists? Two country categories, a jazz category and no folk. I mean c'mon people...
I never hated any of you/I loved you all at the time

I don't think I've ever really seen eye-to-eye with Popmatters, and this list reminds me why. Sure they've got the ubiquitous Radiohead, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, and National in their top 10, but some of the other stuff is baffling. Lyle Lovett resurrecting his big band country shtick from 15 years ago? The flash-in-the-pan retro jazz-n-B of Amy Winehouse? The Fratellis? That stuff isn't exactly top 10 material.

I was really disappointed by this as well. The pop-country category is a joke. If they're gonna have two county lists they might as well name them "best country" and "best shitty country music released by labels that can bring us major advertising revenue."

Hey you KNOW I read WIRE Ishy. They haven't published the year-end issue yet. The December issue has Pram on the cover. I think the January issue is generally when they do the Year End Rewind.
