No offense to fans, but Deerhunter's Cryptograms in any top ten list with any agenda from any slant is still, imho, a judgment of criminal proportions. The album isn't even worthy of top 50 consideration.

I'd have to politely disagree. I wouldn't be surprised if it somehow landed at #1 on P4k's or other AOTY lists. Unlikely, but not insulting either.

I definitely think "The Past Is A Grotesque Animal" is a strong candidate, but P4K does singles, and I don't think Of Montreal released it as a single. So "Hemigsdale...Promethean Curse" and "Gronladic Edit" may be there.

Those top 10 lists were really interesting. I want to hear that Vicious Vicious record now.

I agree wholeheartedly. I feel the same way about The Arctic Monkeys. Luckily, Deerhunter has been mostly disregarded on the year-end lists I've seen.

EDIT: Also, Amy Winehouse - Back to Black.

I'll tell you how I came to love Cryptograms. I designated it as the background music to several long games of Civ 4. In other words: It's glacial. I don't think they meant it, but they created IMO the most expansive rock record of the year.

I've been disappointed in the low positions that of Montreal has been getting on the prelim lists. Hopefully P4K remembers Hissing Fauna.

I think it's a lock for a Top 10 spot. Does that qualify?

You must not have any interest in guitar basslines then. This album probably has the most awesome bass playing I've ever heard. However, there's much more to the album than just the awesome bass.

What happened? They hired a 24-year-old Paul McCartney to kick out the jams?

Two responses...with regards to guitar-bass lines, can't say I have interest or disinterest, a creative professional myself, I tend to be more focused on the impact of the song as a whole. If it elevates the song, great, but virtuousity itself in my book never equates with greatness, virtuousity couple with brilliant conceptualization does, and in the conceptualization department, Deerhunter ain't brilliant.

2nd, I don't despise the album. I actually enjoy Octet, Cryptograms, and Strange Lights quite a bit...but I bought and listened repeatedly to over 120 albums this year, and I felt at least two-thirds of them were, front-to-back, substantially better listens.

What time of the month does Pitchfork put out their list, anyway? I want to say around the 20th...

i have to disagree with you .
we are talkin about two really special releases.both bands have built their own world , with their ownn terms , writing quality tunes n lyrics and with a sound that its hard to find other bands to sound similar.these exceptional releases , in my opinion , definitely deserve a place in the final albums list.(both , are top 5 material for my list).
amy winehouse is a different story.i m not used to hear that genre of music , but i have to admit that its hard to find these days a singer like Amy.Espacially "Back in Black" and "you know i m no good" sound to me like lost old classics from n era that soul and blues ruled the world.

Er, why does Mojo have "Boys and Girls in America" in their list? That was an 06 album...

Mojos list is just about the most ill informed bogus list I've seen. These rags are releasing some really poor lists in my opinion.

The best list I've seen was NPRs top ten.

Album release schedules my friend. Just like certain British albums aren't released in the States in the same year, vice-y versa.

As much as I love the old Mo-ho, this years list is a bit dull.
