I hate the critics who give many 10/10 marks. I mean, I don't even give a 10/10 mark to my favorite record ever, and I never thought giving a 10 in my entire life except for 2 or 3 records. There are something like four perfect marks on metacritic about Neon Bible by Arcade Fire, and it's just nonsense. I mean, I stopped this album while listening to it for the first time, and I don't do it that much! I'll listen to anything by British sea power instead of Arcade Fire. Anyway, Pitchfork didn't give an excellent mark for Neon Bible, and they don't overrate records. I don't really like pitchfork because they underrate excellent records. It's sure that when most of the CDs you critic are indie pop, you are blind in front of serious music.
I like how Arcade Fire was not mentioned in the OP at all, but the thread became immediately about them and how they're not worthy of a perfect score that they didn't actually get from the review source in question.
I doubt there'll be a 10 this year. I think I've yet to see a 9.0+ review from them. Then again, if Radiohead does release an album this year, all bets are off. Every staff member of Pitchfork is totally gay for Radiohead.

I'll take funeral over open season any day... but how's The Decline...?
It's an excellent power pop record with the kind of intensity of Funeral. By the way, I was just complaining about my first listen of Neon Bible, but Funeral contains a few gems.

scoring art is silly and arbitrary, especially on p4k's scale to the tenth. how are you supposed discern the difference between a 7.2 and a 7.3?
i look at ratings as level of recommendation. giving an album five out of five stars doesn't denote artistic perfection, it means the album is enthusiastically recommended.
i mean, the whole notion of perfect art is silly to begin with.
Maybe I'm crazy, but the first band that came to mind for me as having a chance to get it is Wolf Parade. Apologies to the Queen Mary picked up a 9.2 last time around, so it wouldn't take whole lot of improvement for them to get a ten. They're a young band that probably has substantial improvement to make. Expectations are high, but not through the roof a la Neon Bible. Plus, Spencer Krug is a rising force in music.

we have new albums from Radiohead
I've asked the question before - why is everyone so concvinced that Radiohead is coming out with a new album this year? I've not seen an estimated release date anywhere, which for a band of that stature says that it's not coming out in 2007.

If Wolf Parade gets a 10, I'll lose a lot of faith in Pitchfork. They simply aren't that good.
As for the Radiohead thing, they've been in the studio, and have a few new songs they've been playing live. That's sign enough for Radiohead fans to get worked into a frenzy... plus, it's been 4 years since their last.

I'd of course love to see a Radiohead album out in 2007. I'm just guessing that it's not coming out this year based on a few things.
- The lack of information about the album. There's little to no talk of what tracks have been recorded, what the sound of the album is, what the title could be be, and most importantly no estimated release date - A band with the popularity of Radiohead will not have an album released without marketing. - Not to mention mixing and mastering, which obviously will not be done in a shaby manner. - Add on printing album art and CDs, the fact that they still don't even have a label, and any other corporate delays you can think of...
It'll more then likely be at least six months after they've finished recording before it comes out. That gives them three months to be done in the studio. I just don't see it happening. Sorry to disappoint

You would lose faith just because it was Wolf Parade? It's kind of hard to make a judgement like that, right? This is of course a totally theoretical argument, but let's say for the sake of it that Wolf Parade's next album does get a 10. Would you assume that Pitchfork was wrong or would you go listen to it?

I voted no. When was their last 10.0? Source Tags & Codes? Yankee Hotel Foxtrot? Years ago, anyway. And something like Funeral didn't get it, I don't know. I just don't see them shelling out 10.0's anymore, short of you know...Radiohead, but that's been covered. Would be neat to see though.

I'd listen to it, but chances are I'd think that Pitchfork is wrong. I just don't like Spencer Krug. Whatever he does either bores or annoys me. I know it's a personal thing, a taste thing, but in that case, I'd disagree with Pitchfork.
(not that I haven't before...)

GO to the upcoming release section in metacritic and you will find the name radiohead, the date, title and record company are still to be decided but it says 2007...Plus there is something in TIME Magazine about it.
My pick for a 10.0 this year: It's between Aerosmith and Michael Jackson.

The MC calendar also had Chinese Democracy as being released in March, the previously mentioned Wolf Parade coming out with an album in the fall of '06, and Radiohead releasing an album last year at one time or another

I'm doubtful that would happen. As much as I love the Pixies, there's no way they'd be able to recapture the magic they had in 1989. Frank's usually only good for about one or two good tracks an album now. There's no way he'd write another Doolittle. I'm more skeptical after they released the terrible "Bam Thwok" single a couple years ago. I think if they did release another album, it would be a disaster of Stooges proportions.
For comeback albums, I have the highest hopes for Dinosaur Jr.'s new album. I've heard a couple tracks, and indeed they do sound like they've recaptured the magic they had in 1989. That could actually score pretty high.

This is a list of artists I'm excited about whose albums is coming out this year:
Animal Collective The Cure Liars Magnetic Fields The Go! Team The White Stripes Klaus Schulze Interpol Islands Final Fantasy Ladytron M.I.A. The Postal Service Radiohead Sigur Ros Stars New Pornographers Wolf Parade Yeah Yeah Yeahs Pixies
And I can tell you not one of those artists is going to get a 10.
So I agree with the person who said if there was going to be one, it would be from a debut.
