holy hell, I might have thought I wrote a decent blurb were it not for message board hate. To (attempt to) clear up my besmirched name, the Brian/Carl thing was a typo I thought had been taken care of prior to the blurb running. As it happened, I emailed Mark R to correct the morning I saw it. And I agree, he's a great writer!

ps - I'm a guy. an old, old guy

Good to know. No more slights on your gender-specific character from me. But calling it "hate" makes it sound like people were out to slam you personally, which isn't true. It was a claim about bad facts, not bad writing or anything more than that. I actually liked what you said about the song, and that's saying something, given how much I love the song.

Taht's a typo. Were you really just typing so fast that you omitted Carl's first name not once but twice, or was this more of an oversight, or a factual error, like people have been saying all along?

Bryan raises an interesting point, but I do tend to take people's word for what happened.

I guess the issue is this: there are probably LOTS of people (from casual Beach Boys fans all the way to really nutso fans) who are unaware that Carl sings the lead on the song. That, in and of itself, is not a big deal. But when you are writing something that is ostensibly IMPORTANT (and I know P4K is crucially important to a lot of people), you do owe it to the readers to make sure you've checked your facts. If it really was an omission typo, I can't say much about that. But if Bryan is correct in his implication (that it was, in fact, a gap in your knowledge OR a brain-fart on your part), that pushes more towards a credibility issue. Either way, a good proof-reader/editor should have caught the error, particularly given that this was the grand finale of the Best Songs of the 1960's!!!

I'm going to take Dominique at his word. And I, for one, feel bad for having referred to you as a 'she.' A little research on my part would have cleared that up. You don't appear to be an 'old, old man' from what I can tell, though. More like a whippersnapper.

I wouldn't personally call myself a whippersnapper, at least in the context of the other (non-Mark Richardson) writers at the site. I think I'm still one of the older ones (32), and I definitely wouldn't consider myself a casual BB's fan. There are actually writers at the site who weren't born when I bought my first beach boys record! (which I haven't decided is funny or just depressing)

It was def my mistake when I wrote the blurb. I actually caught it a few days beforehand, but apparently some kind of caching issue with the publishing server made the draft go up on site rather than the edit. In any case, GOK is exhibit A as far as I'm concerned in the testimony to Carl Wilson being the true great BB's vocalist, so brainfart, typo, whatever, it was an absent-minded mistake from someone who loves Carl's singing as much as anyone he knows. Wink

Thanks for the input, Dominique. I agree with you wholeheartedly about Carl's great voice...I know he was the lead voice on "Wild Honey" and "Good Vibrations", among other great BB tracks. I think, with all the "mad genius of Brian Wilson" talk, alot of people forgot how great some of the other folks in the band were: Carl was the de facto leader of the band for some of their best and most consistent albums: Sunflower and Surf's Up, in particular. And Dennis Wilson's out-of-print solo album Pacific Ocean Blue is a stunner. I can't say anything nice about Mike Love for providing us the musical emetic that is "Kokomo."

32 might be an 'old guy' for the writers at Pitchfork, but I'm the same age as you, and I consider myself quite youthful. But, then again, the average age of the people in my field (academic philosophers teaching at universities) is probably WAY higher than P4K writers.

You could go jab the guy from DiS with a stick, though I think he stopped dropping by after proving to be a humorless ninny.

They're also timely. That DiS guy showed up on that thread after nearly a year since the last post. At least the p4k staff get here within a week or so of somebody dissing them.

It is odd what a small world the Internet makes things. The insignificant self-declared 'experts' (nice one, Frank! Winkin this Forum rate a visit by the omnipredicate writers at P4K? It's like the Pope showing up at some kid's house because he's beginning to question the Papal dogma...

Now we just need to get Amanda Petrusich in here to let Bryan_K have it for not liking her Dylan review. No, wait: we really DON'T need that.

What if Amanda turns out to be a dude too? Wouldn't that be weird?

She couldn't say much to convert me to her writing style, but it'd be surreal to debate Modern Times with Pitchfork's apparent authority on the man himself. I'd love it. And appearances to the contrary notwithstanding, I really *can* keep arguments civil and decent when the need arises. Big Grin
