I'm happy for you, but let's be honest - it wasn't exactly a long shot that they'd give it a 10.0. They did rate it as their favorite album of the 80's, after all.

For my 2 cents, I'm not sure Pitchfork wil ever give another 10.0. I have this funny feeling that they don't have any cojones anymore, and they'd be too afraid of the backlash for making that large of a commitment to any record, regardless of how good.

I'm talking strictly new releases - with reissues the danger element isn't there.

Well, I think they should take these risks more often!

Let's look at the albums they've awarded 10.0's too on original release

The Soft Bulletin, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Kid A, OK Computer: these albums are widely considered classics on this board - which has above average taste, imo.

I See A Darkness, Source Tags & Codes: these albums aren't talked about as much, but definitely have quite a few fans.

Bricolage, El Producto: both 10.0s were awarded in Schreiber's early days, and are the most dubious choices. Still, not many seem to hold the albums in disdain (I have personally not heard either).

Lesson Learned: P4K needs to have the courage to give out the necessary 10.0s!!

AC, maybe.

There's no way they'd give Jose a 10. Maybe 8, more likely 7.

On what basis do you make this assertion?

They gave his first album a 7.0

And typically, they don't give super high scores to singer-songwriter types.

I’ll be Ben Gazzara, you’ll be Gena Rowlands.

Sufjan and Joanna Newsom are notable exceptions, but their music is a lot more elaborate. Jose's music is good, but I'm not sure it's their definition of a 10. Even Devendra Banhart, who they typically adore, hasn't even gotten higher than mid 8's.

They're also notoriously stingy with them, unless it's a reissue.

I want a new 10.0 for 2007! My guess is it won't be an indie giant. Either a debut or a second/third album for a band or artist who heretofore hasn't garnered much attention.

It will give us something to talk about, at least. Wink

Did they give a 10.0 (non-reissue) for 2006? How about 2005?

I feel kind of like a broken record, but the last non-reissue 10.0 they gave was in early '02. I think it was Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.
