I can't believe people still visit the site, personally. I don't like reading essays to find out if I'm going to like an album or not. The writers are still pompous. That's why I like sites like Metacritic. Quick glance, see what might be up my alley, then go download to try it out. If it's hot, it gets my dollar.

I think Ryan should go back to a grassroots site. Sell of PF to Yahoo or MSN.

Haha. I feel pretty much the same way, MusicEmissions. I do check in on P-fork for the news every couple days though.

Pitchfork gives 10.0s? When was the last 10.0?

I believe it was Wilco's YHF, if memory serves. That was in 2002. But that seems like an awful long time ago so I may be wrong.

They've been pretty harsh on the grading, recently. So even an 8.something is high praise from P4k.

Well, PFORK has actually been pretty liberal with new releases though, they are adding to their "BEST NEW MUSIC" section pretty often, and I appreciate it.

In 2006, the highest score was 9.4 (Ys, Boys and Girls in America)
In 2005, it was a 9.5 for Late Registration
In 2004, it was 9.7 for Funeral with Blueberry Boat close behind with 9.6.

I don't know about 2003, but 2002 had two 10.0s for Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Source Tags and Codes and Keith Fullerton Whitman's Playthroughs got a 9.7.

2003 had Pitchfork giving a 10.0 to Glenn Branca's The Ascension, although I don't know if you folks want to count that since it was a reissue.

Personally I'm holding out for high marks for the new Iron and Wine album coming out this fall, however I doubt it will be groundbreaking enough to get the 10 spot

They've given plenty of 10.0 scores to reissues. Born to Run and Aeroplane come to mind as two I know they've given recent perfect scores to. But yeah, the last 10.0 they gave to a new release was either to Wilco or Trail of Dead. Can't remember which one.

Man, that Trail of Dead album is a good one though. Just a side note Big Grin

Oh sure, Trail of Dead was a great album. Though, of course, it's no Radiohead...

I'd give Funeral and Blueberry Boat higher marks than Trail of Dead.

I don't think P4K will give another 10.0 for quite some time. I really thought that Ys would get it last year, but it didn't, so now I don't know what to expect. The new Smashing Pumpkins record certainly isn't shaping up into a 10 worthy record, and I feel like Radiohead has all this hype that it will be impossible to please everyone. Unless there is some kickass debut that no one knows about, I don't see any 10s in the forseeable future...

Yeah, it's hard to figure out what they might deem worthy of a 10. I thought the Panda bear album would have gotten one, but alas, 9.4, which seems to be the ceiling they've held for the past year.

Ok, now lets all guess what Pitchfork will give Icky Thump.

Re-cap:

The White Stripes 8.3
De Stijl 9.0
White Blood Cells 9.0
Elephant (An extremely sad) 6.9
Get Behind Me Satan 7.3

I guess an:

Icky Thump 8.2

As for me, I would rate it no lower than a 9.0 Razzer.

I loved what I've heard from it (the single). I'd rate it an 8.4 myself, but I don't think Pitchfork's going to be too keen. I predict a 7.1 from the indie giant (ha, oxymoron Big Grin)

A la Sebtron, what about Ga to the Fifth? They have been part of the hype surrounding this fine new Spoon offering. Here's how they've graded Britt in the past:

Telephono, 7.5
Series of Sneaks, 9.4 (My fave, great P4K's too)
Girls Can Tell, 8.0
Kill the Moonlight, 8.9
Gimmee Fiction, 7.9

I think the 10 drought might be over-- then again, they might give it a 5.4-- who the hell knows with these f*ckers. Personally, I think it's worthy of an 8-9 score.

I doubt they'll give Spoon a 10. They always give respectable but not necessarily huge scores.

Here's hoping that people don't start referring to Spoon's new album as Ga^5 or the aforementioned Ga to the Fifth or Ga5xs or 5Gas or anything else like that.

Because Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga just rolls off the tongue?

I've played the prediction game pretty well so far this year—the numerous 5s to critical faves almost made it too easy!—but I think Spoon's going to see some revisionism. They fucked the pooch underrating Girls Can Tell and Gimme Fiction. 9.2.
