Which not too usual albums are getting 5 stars at the All Music Guide?

I am looking for the more unusual albums, like e.g. "High Land Hard Rain" by Aztec Camera, not the already well known ones.

It's my impression that All Music Guide does not give 5 stars to unusual albums.

Allmusicguide doesn't give 5 stars to non-classical albums that came about after they started doing reviews.

But if you go back farther you tend to find a lot of 5 stars in anything considered a 'classic', or anything that's a very good example of some 'niche' genre, like various styles of electronica.

I'm more interested in if they're ever reviewed an album that warranted a NO STARS rating from them.

The lowest I've seen is one star for William Hung. Other than that I've never seen anything below 2 stars.

An album by Tantric got 1 1/2 star. It's Days of the New without Travis Meeks.

You know, Travis Meeks, the guy who wrote all his music as if under the assumption he was as good as Jim Morrison? Smiler

But in my opinion the Aztec Camera - album is such an unusual album. Of course, that's an exception, but that's just what I am looking for.

Ok then. How about Pure Guava by Ween? It doesn't get much weirder than that.

It's hardly obscure or anything, but I noticed that one of Will Smith's early "Fresh Prince" rap albums was given five stars (don't ask me how I came to notice that, because I really don't know). It's especially strange considering the reviewer says in so many words, "this is not a consequential album".

And on a vaguely related note, I've noticed that the only albums released recently (since the turn of the millennium) to be given five stars by AMG are hip-hop and electronica. The few that I could name include Stankonia by Outkast, Quality Control by Jurassic 5, Rooty by Basement Jaxx and some remix CD of existing songs (how something like that would be awarded five stars, I'll never know) by Aphex Twin. I think that "indie rock" (as a very broad term) is evolving and new sub-divisions appearing at least as often as in hip-hop or electronica, so I'm surprised that no "indie" titles released so far this millenium have been rated at five stars yet.

Whats up with AMG today.

They make you log in now to see anything?
Is anybody else having to do this?

I had to do it last time, although I might not have noticed that it may have welcomed me back, but I just tried it again and it seems normal.

I21- Have you been using allmusic.com alot lately? If you use it over a certain amount from the same computer within a certain period of time, you will have to log in. I guess there idea is that if you are using it that much, you should have to bite the bullet and register. If you don't want to sign in just wait a little bit. It usually stops requiring it after about a day.

It's kind of obnoxious for a site to force you to shell out personal information just to see their content.

I always lie. Smiler

123 Fake Street is a popular address, but I tend to go with 317 Upside Down Street.

Here's one for you, the Amazing Rhythm Aces - Stacked Deck album. Kind of a southern rock sort of thing. It's one you don't hear of much.

You're reffering to "26 Mixes for Cash". That album does deserve 5 stars. It's up there with some of the best stuff he's ever done. Furthermore, the mixes sound only remotely like the source material he's mixing from. It might as well be original compositions, for all intensive purposes they are.
