Interestingly U2 translates to 40 percent on Metecritic, P4K do explain that they mean recent U2 not Joshua tree era.

All grading systems are inherently flawed because it is more important to know why reviewers like/dislike an album than just how much they do. I've always kind of thought that a series of categories would be more explanatory... like an album scores on harmony and lyrics, but fails on beats, energy and discordance etc... people who like discordance will stay clear and people who want lyrics will look further.

Or an album has indie appeal and shoegaze appeal, but little hip-hop, rock and dance appeal (and whatever other categories you can think of)

Another interesting point is that when you search for albums with "O.O" ratings on Pitchfork, that album comes up.

Well it also comes up when searching for scores at 1.0 or under which makes sense because the score is U.2 and the search algorithm won't be able to determine what the U is and depending on what its failsafes are probably determine its a zero. Thus the score would be 0.2

I was about to ask if Pitchfork has given anything this year a 9+, but it looks like they just gave No Age a 9.2. Can't say I'm that interested in it, though.

There was also this but I don't think anyone noticed.

If re-issues count, MBV's Loveless will nab a 10.0. Isn't Anything will at least be in the low 9's.

fleet foxes just got a 9.0. Any chance of coldplay getting a perfect 10.0?

I'd bet money the new Deerhunter nabs a 9+, maybe even 9.5 territory.

+9 is very likely, not so sure about 9.5, they haven't given anything more than 9.4 for the last few years as far as I'm aware. Actually, I'll stake 15 cool points on it being 9.3 right now.

Sufjan's Illinois only pocketed a 9.2 in 2005. Arcade Fire recieved a 9.7 in 2004 for Funeral.

As a slightly separate comment I think Pitchfork skews scores in favor of debuts.

If the band has been around for a while, I doubt they will get massive Pitchfork scores. But who knows.

Since few people know about a debut before it comes out, they probably feel freer to rank it highly (and their ranking obviously helps make instant stars). Then, when everyone gets bored of it after two weeks, they can pan their next album and stay trendy. Trail Of The Dead anyone?

Exactly. However, I am compelled to say that Source Tags and Code is an amazing album still and deserved a solid 9.5+

But it's really case in point to mention that as much as I loved the album, I hardly even considered listening to their follow ups simply because of the bad reviews.

I think that over the last few years, Pitchfork has been pretty good about giving good albums good ratings and bad albums bad ratings, but I've been really disappointed by the actual distributions within good and bad... 8.5 for Random Spirit Lover? 9.2 for Nouns? Are you serious?

Yeah sometimes I think they are just seeing what they can get away with. Testing their influence, it seems that I rarely like anything on the recommended list.

Yeah I think they gave 9.4 to panda bear's person pitch last year and 9.3 to radiohead's in rainbows. Probably the two bands that break the pitchfork debut rule are radiohead and modest mouse (I wonder if modest mouse will ever get a really high score again since they have kind of cracked the mainstream, maybe they should hire brian eno).

Maybe wolf parade will get a 10.0

um...did you not read the review yesterday?
7.7

Clearly not a 10.0

I'm not sure if they'll ever give out another 10, outside of a reissue. I just don't see it happening.

Those would both be a 7.0 at best from me, but prolly worse for Nouns.

My point is that if you like Random Spirit Lover and Nouns (which Pitchfork clearly did), I can't understand how you could give an 8.5 to RSL... it's such a polarizing album, almost nobody just thinks its good; they either think it's okay/bad or brilliant.

Basically I'm saying that it seems like they decide if they want to give a good, middling, or bad score and then randomly assign something in the range.
