Here's where you take the most bloated cynical (or even eloquent and concise) album reviews on the 'net, trim the fat, and present (expose) the thesis. Maybe somebody could come up with some stricter guidelines for this, but for now, just attempt to strip away the aspects of an album review that aren't related to the main point of the review (if there is one), and try to consolidate your "findings" into one brief paragraph. Is this thread just too "meta"? Nah. Eeker

I usually post this sort of thing in the 'Best Records of 2008' thread if it's a new album or somewhere else (either 'New to You' or else 'Indie Rock' or 'Folk/Americana') if it's not. Maybe I'll start posting here though too. It's not a bad idea.

Yeah, I'm aware that it's slightly redundant to post something in "Best of 2008" in which you discuss this or that review in relation to how you feel personally about an album, and then come here and furthur discuss the review; but this thread, I think, should be specifically to "shrink" convoluted reviews down to their essence. In that spirit it would probably help everyone if you post a link to the review in question as well. I hope people do this, I think it would be useful. Smiler

I thought this is what Metacritic is for in the first place. Just look at the one or two sentence summaries for each album.

PopMatters' shorttake reviews are already one paragraph, as are most magazines.

Right, but metacritic just take out a piece of the review that's exemplary, it doesn't distill, paraphrase, or interpret; and Popmatters, while often visited by me, isn't definitive or anything. Just because other people are likely saying similar things as us in other music forums doesn't stop us from popping off about our favorite music. This thread is for interpreting reviews through our unique perspectives as keen audiophiles.

But maybe it is just a bad idea. Oh well, they can't all be zingers. Big Grin
