Reason #1: Indie rock is very hot right now. New releases are coming out all the time so there is plenty for people to talk about.
Reason #2: Indie fans are music nerds. I don't mean this in a bad way, that is just the relationship they have with what they enjoy. If you listen to house music, you like it because you can dance to it. If you listen to indie, you like it because you can analyze it to death.

It's been a while since I've payed attention to any of the metacritic reviews. I already have my review sources, so I now only come here to talk to you wonderful people.
But, metacritic can be a bit mainstream for my taste. I don't mind though, sometimes it helps me catch albums that I let slip by.

There is more to life than mainstream. When you start delving into the indie racks you need guidance if you aren't knowledgeable. That's where a lovely site like Metacritic comes along. It gives you the facts about what's hot and what's not. Not what sells the most.
I think last year that Tropicala release was one of the top albums on MC. I bet it never even charted on Billboard.

I feel the same way. In contrast to whoever started this thread, Metacritic is too mainstream for me. I'll check in every now and then to see what kind of reviews an artists I care about is getting but mostly I just come here for the forums.
And though I don't let Metacritic guide my music choices, I do check out the movie scores to help me decide which movie to watch on the rare occasion that I go to a theater.

It's pretty useful in choosing movies to see, I'll give you that. Metacritic can be a little mainstream in music choices, though. Still, there are times when an album like Ys (shudder) gets great press on Metacritic. My dad likes Ys, but I can't stand it. Art is subjective...

Yeah, Metacritic is way too mainstream. I can't wait to listen to this new band called Thee Pretentious A-holes. They're streaming their new 8-disc album, I'm So Obscure Your (Pretend) Friends Won't Know About Me, on their MySpace page. It seriously brood-rocks.

How many times have you made a sarcastic stab like that? Let me remind you of rule #2 of Metacritic's policies:
quote:
2.Do not repeat things that have already been said. This means you are responsible for READING PREVIOUS POSTS before making a post yourself. Obviously, if there are hundreds of posts on a topic, you won't be required to read every one, but you should read a significant portion of them. Users who constantly repeat things that have already been said do not add anything of value to the discussions in our Forums.

Yeah, that's pretty much all Leland does these days, stop by and make fun of everyone just to let us know how much better he is than us.

I'm not really sure that putting someone down because their definition of "mainstream" differs from yours is a worthwhile pursuit, or a morally justifiable one, but meh.

"Morally justifiable" eh? You're probably right. You kids certainly did turn this board around the last year and a half. I remember how awful it was in the beginning. People like LinnTate and PhilosopherEric used to say crazy--crazy!--things, like, "I love music," and, "Hey, check out this band." I'm glad you've quieted them down some. The conversations were seriously out of control.

I personally enjoyed (and still enjoy) the discussions of music that permeate these boards. The conversations are still here; for whatever reason, philospherEric and LinnTate aren't around as much. But simply because we are here instead does not mean we drove them off. I asked about a bunch of bands just a few weeks ago and found some potentially great artists, the albums of which I am still pursuing; the boards are alive and well despite missing some old-timers (and we do miss them).
So, to kickstart the new Metacritic cycle of music loving, what have you been digging from 2007?

If people on these boards hadn't talked so highly of bands like The Good the Bad and the Queen, The Veils, and the latest by Of Montreal.
These forums are a great tool for getting honest, well-informed opinions about music. That's why I check the boards so frequently. I can't deny that arguing can be fun sometimes, too...
