But that still doesn't entirely justify giving bad scores to other really good albums that just happen to be from well known groups. This just makes people like me not entirely trust them when they give a high score to an obscure band. I have to ask, if they give a bad score to a group only because they are popular, is it possibly they are giving a high score to a group only because they are unpopular?
Not likely, because the unpopular stuff they hear and don't like they just ignore and never review. It's only if something they dislike is somewhat popular that they review it.

What score does everyone think CMG will give this week's biggest releases when they review them (which will probably happen sometime in October). Here are some of my predictions:
Animal Collective - 86% The Go! Team - 65% Kanye West - 58% 50 Cent - 35%

I don't have any predictions, just wanted to say that those are some precise guesses.

I would go a bit lower with Animal Collective - maybe in the 70s, low 80s. haven't heard the other three.

I agree -- and I wouldn't mind those sorts of rankings either

In defense of cokemachineglow, they've turned me onto the bulk of my favorite albums of the year. I was a little dissapointed with their opinions on a few albums this year (Okkervil River namely, and they've gone crazy over a few albums I didn't like), but they've also recommended some pretty excellent music. For example, my number one of the year is Deer Tick's War Elephant. I never would have heard of that album if I wasn't reading cokemachineglow. The Nina Nastasia album they're in love with is also really good, and so far they're the only site that has even paid attention to one of my favorites of the year, Stars of the Lid's And Their Refinement of the Decline. And there have always been writers on that site that have irked me off, but it's one of the best sites out there for music reviews. Plus, the site's writers represent a pretty broad spectrum of taste, so when writers recommend rap albums or electronic albums, you can be pretty sure the recommendation isn't a lip service.
Looks like the Glow updates on Mondays now, so now instead of being a few days behind everyone else, now they are over a week behind. They're still not getting around to reviewing the stuff that most of their readers want to see on a timely basis. The last update included a review of the new Sunset Rubdown, but everything else was out for at least a week and already reviewed by every other site and print mag. If they are going to post reviews on Mondays now, said reviews should be of albums being released that week; that would be awesome, but I doubt it will happen.
Though being first on the block has never been a huge concern of CMG's (first priority: the writing), this is certainly a valid criticism. Monday updates aren't ideal for us, either, but that's unfortunately how the regular work schedules are working out at the moment. I think our editorial staff is dreaming of when we can go back to two updates a week and having those updates firmly in place. That's what we're working towards right now through some technical implementations and, thankfully, a small influx of really strong applicants. We'd gone almost half a year of constantly receiving applications that didn't work for us, and then suddenly we get blessed with several that impressed. So, while we're not completely satisfied with our current state, we are hopeful about our immediate future and we're gonna do what we can to make that future a reality. Even if we're not getting paid and have to stretch ourselves a little thin because of the other demands on our time, our readers and the artists we write about still deserve the best coverage that we're capable of providing.
I can tell you right now that we're gonna wait a bit on the Radiohead review. I think everyone and their grandma's already offered their opinion on In Rainbows, so rather than trying to rush our voice into the pack, we're gonna take a little time and have a couple writers really dig into the album. Hopefully what they come up with will benefit from that and be a little more insightful than it would have been if we put out the review this week.
I wish I had seen CMG's review of Pinback's latest album before I went out and bought it. I could have saved $13. Sheesh. I think waiting to put out reviews is perfectly reasonable. Lets the dust settle a little. On a similar vein, take the MC forum members' "Best of" list that is compiled every year. If it were up to me, I'd say the list should be made in June of the following year. It really does take at least that much time for me to settle on my favorite albums for the previous year. And if we're talking "Best of Decade" Lists...well, you can guess when I would do those.
My only beef with Cokemachineglow - where's the RSS feeds, man? I have P4K, A/V club, Stylus feeds on my Google Reader. I'd love to get CMG subscribed. This is 2007! (Now, if I'm being an idiot, and they are there somewhere, could someone please kindly give me the location or url?)

I'm looking for Russian Militant Black Metal. Semi-good production is a plus, as are clean vocals (if kept to a minimum). Also looking for vocals in Russian. Basically like a Russian version of Absurd...

ezkcdude: they're coming. We'll have dedicated feeds for reviews, nbh, features, concert reviews, and retconning, and the feeds will work correctly for subscribers to our podcasts through iTunes.
(And I guess I should add: this is 2007, but the site (for a couple more months anyway) is still an archaic 2004 html beast which Scott basically has to hand-code with each update. The new site (spoiler!) is much prettier and user-friendly. We're hoping to relaunch in January.)
And since I'm posting anyway:
Hi all! I'll add my thanks for all the caring going on in this thread (even if I have been referred to as a dick once or twice). Aw. I'm blushing.

I have nothing to add except that I LOVED your review of Kammerflimmer Kollektief's Jinx. It's one of my favorite albums of the year.
