I think the thing about music writing is this - if you have a passion for it, if you can talk about the music and make references then you will start to be on the right track. I get a ton of sample work from contributing writers at bandnation that are pretty much - this album was great or this album sucks. but didn't say why - and they wonder why their stuff never gets published.
Keep writing, keep listening, read a lot of music mags and news, and I you'll get there. and yes have more balls to say damn your stuff is good.
this is interesting stuff her eon this thread. i wish you luck, JGlass and others!
I am lately trying to figure out if I want to be a critic. I like writing about music, but don't do it enough. I used to write reviews for the university newspaper but i kept getting middle of the road releases that i didn't care to listen to enough to form a solid opinion on and it got tedious haha. I like writing about the things that I really care about. I tried my hand at a review last month after a large break, but I wasn't particularly pleased with how it turned out.
you might rather want to check out my podcast... i put an inordinate amount of effort into it.
In the meantime i need to set some writing goals for myself. maybe 1 album review a week or something.
