Claypool always has... interesting instruments. The time I saw him he was using some sort of stick that had 4 strings and was being used as a stand-up bass. He hit it with another stick.
------ Let's raise a toast to St. Joe Strummer! I do believe he was our only decent teacher

Haha, they def. get creative. I swear that one of the percussionists was using a cd cases zipper as an instrument.

Ok Mr. JGlass. I believe the purpose of this discussion was your pursuit of becoming a music critic. WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE. I was in the same boat as you: strong opinions, loved to write, and loved music. And my friends got tired of listening to me bitch. So, like you I started a blog, and I began working on some samples. And after getting turned down by like 25 or 30 sites, I now write for Delusions of Adequacy, under the guise of http://www.adequacy.net/staff.php?staffID=317 Diggsy. I'm certainly not any good, but I have found a style that suits my reviews and my columns very well. To do it as a career, well, I have no idea, I do sales and management by trade, but I don't have a degree, or any kind of journalistic experience. Just balls, some strong opinions, and occasionally the ability to put it all together into a coherent sentence. Good night, and good luck. Mahalo.

yeah, definitely keep writing. The more you write, the more you'll have published, and the more you get published, the more people will want to publish your writing. It takes a lot of persistence though. And don't get discouraged if someone doesn't email you back. Editors are busy folk.

I don't want to come off like an evangelist but this is one of the reasons Music Emissions exists. It's a launch pad of sorts to help budding writers and critics practice and learn the ropes. We just had one of our editorial reviewers go off and land a job with Chicago Tribune offshoot Red Eye. To get started, sign up for an account and add some "user reviews". Once these get to a level we feel is professional and well done we will invite you into the folds of the Editorial Team. Then you'll start receiving some great (and some crappy) indie releases to review. Try it out.

It's nice to be getting all this advice.. P.S. Crowdiggs- I'm a big fan of DoA, you guys tend to pick up on a lot of albums that most places don't.

Write for your college paper. If you do well and become, say, arts editor, you can develop relationships with music publicity people. If you have an alternative weekly in your town, do that at some point in the future. This is where most major music writers have come from. Write all the fucking time. Go nuts. USE that blog. READ a lot. I mean A LOT. Read more than you write, actually. Read rock books. Read anything published by Da Capo Press. They publish some of the best music writing around. Go to the music section of your local Borders, Barnes and Noble or whatever local bookstore. Read Chuck Klosterman, Greil Marcus, Alan Light, Will Hermes, Ann Powers and so on. Play music. Learn guitar, keyboards, bass or drums. Study music theory. Read literature so you can high-mindedly reference things. Know how to report; take a journalism or at least a communications course. Know how to hustle. You're going to freelance and that's the only way you'll get to write music peices.

I entered a scholarship for college students who blog and if I make it into the finalists then it comes down to votes from the public. I was hoping that if I do make it to the finals then those of you who enjoy my blog might vote for me, or at least compare me to the comp. and vote if you prefer me. Just a little heads up. I find out on Oct. 8th if I make it to the finals.
