I've got a question which I could really use your help with. I just broke my gamecube (don't ask how-long story) and a friend has offered to give me his old PS2. He doesn't have any joysticks or memory card and I will need to go and buy them. My question is since his PS2 is the first one (2000) are there any problems playing new games since I know that newer versions of PS2 have been released since then? I don't want to spend money buying joysticks and memomy cards and not be able to play the new games.
The only problem you might find is the dreaded "Disk Read Error". However, if that begins to happen consistantly, do a search of the net for instructions on how to have sony fix it for free.
I reserve the right to be entirely wrong.

Depends kinda...does this happen with just certain games or are you unabe to play any games period? I've seen that happen a lot with older GTA 3 and vice city games, or just scratched games. If you can't play any games at all though there is probably a problem with your laser.
My PS2 just didn't read games it didnt want to, it didn't say "Disc Read Error" but if i went in to "Browser" and put a games in it would say "Reading Disc" for about 1second and then nothing would happen, like if i didnt put anything in but just opened and closed it. WHat is wrong? Still, if the one your friend had given you works then its much better than a GameCube, more games like GT, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, God Of War, Destroy ALl Humans, Area 51 etc

I haven't really heard anything of the sort, but probably. PS2 is quite modifiable.
I have a modded Xbox, (yeah I said it) and I was wondering what you could do with a modded ps2. I have a 160 Gig harddrive in my Xbox but was wondering if you could put a harddrive in a ps2.
P.S even though I have a modded xbox I still buy more games than anyone I know so don't tell me I am cheating game companies because almost every game on my harddrive I have bought and own.

The idea of a hard-drive for PS2 (which could supposedly be attached through that Expansion Port in the back of the machine) has been tossed around for a while, but I haven't seen any sign of it happening.
One of the good things about PS2 is that it's quite easy to install a mod-chip that would allow games and DVDs of any regional format to be played.
There's something like this for X-Box, I think, but apparently X-Box Live connections run scans for these, which could be a problem if you play online a lot.

Your Growlanser III disk might be scratched. Growlanser Generations is one of the only PS2 games my PS2 still plays! The thing is, it happens to different formats, I think. My PS2 reads PSX games and some PS2 games fine, but I think it's the ones on a certain format (most new ones included) that it won't read. I've heard of the opposite happening to different people. If it's just GIII and GII still works, it's probably your disk and not your PS2.

This is only a rumor i have heard so i cant guarantee it is true, but I have heard new ps2 games are done on dvd roms rather than cd roms, and the first ps2 has trouble reading them. Take god of war for example, my friend got one and his regular ps2 cant read it but my newer version ps2 can
For the first question, there are two plusses for buying a slimline PS2. As you already heard, the Disk Read Error is common with certain types of games in the old version, but not the slimline. Also, the old PS2 has a long loading time, but the slimline has a faster loading time. Other than that, base your decision off of the price. If the new one is only, oh say, $50 more, buy the new one.

I am wondering,, I have an older ps2 (spch-39001) and it will not read Jaws Unleashed, when I play Scarface it only lets me get so far in the game and then it skips and freezes the screen,.... do I need to get a new slimline PS2? Or what??? I am beyond frustrated with this machine!!!
