I tend to agree with the reviews. While certainly not a perfect game, my ultimate test for a game is if it pasts the test of time. There are many games I think are great that don't have much replay value. When it comes to Halo, it is always a game that I love to a) play online with friends b) play through the quest again.
Bottom line, is it stands the test of time, and is well deserving of the scores.

Well, yeah, Some adventure games (I mean, most of them) have bad replay value. However, the ratings for them are high. Why? Because they haven't FINISHED the game!

Halo 3 is the most played video game on Xbox Live last I checked, with Call of Duty World at War in 2nd place I think. Not sure what's third but wouldn't be surprised if it's CoD4. Either way, the fact that the game is still the most played game out there should tell you why it rates so highly.
There is no game out there that everyone is going to love. Halo 3 just happens to be one of those that most people who've played it enjoy, and enjoy it for a long time. It has replayability, and staying power. Gamers who bought it long ago still play it, and new gamers keep coming to it.
On top of the game itself, it brought very good implementations of matchmaking players/parties, recordings, and game stats on the web, among other things. These last few features in particular do more than people realize at keeping players coming back for more, and I'm surprised more games don't implement these features yet. Left 4 Dead I have wished since it came out that it had a good matchmaking and web stats system. Recordings would have been awesome too (I'm from Tribes/Tribes 2 back on the PC, and loved watching match demo recordings for those games).
Halo: 97 ( I agree with rating. ) Halo 2: 95 ( I don't agree with rating. ) Halo 3: 94 ( I agree with rating. ) Personal Halo 2 Rating: 78 ( I agree with rating. )
It's the Flood, when CE came out, no one knew about the Flood until halfway through the game, all of a sudden, wow there's a new enemy to fight and there's a new strategy I have to learn, that surprise is probably what gave it high marks. As for it's current status? it's clearly slacked off, I only know a couple people who still keep it around, and even then, only for multiplayer.
1st one was deserved as it was so far ahead at the time but I agree the other two are overrated as they never really moved on. Then again I don't play online multiplayer, I think that aspect is why people love them.

Which is ironic since it was finished and due to come out years prior for the computer, but was bought by Microsoft so they could build their new console on it. It had a major splash effect because it was the game Microsoft hyped like crazy in order to get people to buy into the Xbox system. It worked of course. and granted, even with all of Microsoft's hype the whole thing would have collapsed if the game hadn't been worth paying money for and playing repeatedly. After having this amazing experience with it on a new system, after all the anticipation, sequels really don't need much energy of their own. They just need to keep feeding that nostalgia.

All the software Microsoft is hyping like crazy in order to get people to buy it:
Microsoft WIndows - Microsoft hyping it like crazy in order to get people to buy
Microsoft Office - Microsoft hyping it like crazy in order to get people to buy
Microsoft HALO - Microsoft hyping it like crazy in order to get people to buy
Actually the Microsoft startegy is pretty retarded, they always manage to develop a below average software that is below human standards of reliability and easy of use, or even fun, after they are sure that there is no competition capable to threat them with amy better software, they start hyping it like crazy.
