Jules: Normally, both your asses would be dead as fucking fried chicken, but you happen to pull this shit while I'm in a transitional period so I don't wanna kill you, I wanna help you. But I can't give you this case, it don't belong to me. Besides, I've already been through too much shit this morning over this case to hand it over to your dumb ass.

I've heard only good things about this game from guitarists as well. I am a guitarist, and have never played it. However, it is apparently completely different from playing guitar from what I have heard. I don't want to waste the money on the thing if it's stupid for guitarists to play, though.

Less, I have definitely been there. I probably burned out on the game, but I had some good times with friends just drinking beers while playing and making up new lyrics to freebird. Good times. I'm not a guitarist though, so I guess I don't have anything meaningful to add to this discussion.

I thought you were serious after your first line. But yeah, of course it isn't as fun as actually playing a live gig. It is an enjoyable game, and I'm glad to hear that you're liking it. Both I and II have great soundtracks, if you're intersested in picking up the first one also.

Being a guitarist myself, I can say that having some prior experience with guitars may help those who are new to the game, but it's important to realise that Guitar Hero bares very little resemblance to the actual thing. That being said, Guitar Hero cannot actually "teach" a person how to play guitar, but it may appeal to non-guitarist and encourage them to pursue lessons. Also, I must agree with one of the earlier comments. Guitar Hero + Booze = Totally a winning combo!

I don't think being a guitarist would really matter with providing a subjective answer. I mean as a pool player I got a few pool games on my cell phone. Was it like playing pool? Some are close but not really like playing a real pool game. Still, it can be a ton of fun, especially when bored.
I play on the train so if it can make my hour long commute go faster...great!

Part of the biggest draw to the game is the feeling it gives non-musicians as if they're actually playing their favorite songs on stage in front of an audience, without having to realize any sort of success, whether it be in talent for the instrument or getting into a band to play a gig. If you know that rush, I'm not sure that you can get so much out of it, even if you are challenged by the 6 buttons. I went the opposite way though. I got pretty damned good at GH/GH2 that I decided to pick up the real thing. I'm nowhere near as good, obviously, because the two have little in common, but it was a good leaping point.

I guess the game can’t be all bad if it’s at least inspiring people to actually pick up a real guitar and learn. As a guitarist, and having worked with many other guitarists, I have observed that we are snobby bunch that tend to be competitive when it comes to anything guitar related.

this is a great question and you're not the only one to have asked this question. the wall street journal had a whole article on it, as did several other news sources. and there is a really lively discussion going on about it on my board i guess general consensus is that even though kids aren't really learning to play by playing this game, it's inspiring them to go learn for real...

Coming from the other side (inexperienced guitar player) GH series helps alot with speed and accuracy of your fingers. It has actually inspired me to pick up the guitar again because my downfall before was how slow my fingers moved. I play GH on expert and actually beat all settings on GH2, i think its good for newer guitarists to practice timings and accuracy. For all the people I know that are experienced guitarists, they have fun with it and actually started out on the hard setting. I recommend at least trying it out.
