Okay.. I've been playing guitar for 13 years now, at a pretty advanced level. My question to other guitarists that have played any of these games: Would it be a waste of money to buy this? All I hear, are good things, however I want to know from other guitarists if its worth it.

Thanks

KF

I certainly don't have the expertise that you have on guitar (13 years is a pretty long time.) As a casual guitar player I can tell you that Guitar Hero is not at all like actually playing guitar, but it's got its own charm. Being a musician probably makes the game easier just because you get experience with time signatures, speed and such, but it certainly doesn't mean you'll be able to instantly master it. In fact, it gets very hard on high difficulty levels. I have a blast when I play Guitar Hero, personally - especially with a group of friends and a few beers. That combo pretty much guarantees a good time in my circle.

But I can't give you this case, it don't belong to me. Besides, I've already been through too much shit this morning over this case to hand it over to your dumb ass.

I've heard only good things about this game from guitarists as well. I am a guitarist, and have never played it. However, it is apparently completely different from playing guitar from what I have heard. I don't want to waste the money on the thing if it's stupid for guitarists to play, though.

Less, I have definitely been there. I probably burned out on the game, but I had some good times with friends just drinking beers while playing and making up new lyrics to freebird. Good times.

I'm not a guitarist though, so I guess I don't have anything meaningful to add to this discussion.

I thought you were serious after your first line. Red Face

But yeah, of course it isn't as fun as actually playing a live gig. It is an enjoyable game, and I'm glad to hear that you're liking it. Both I and II have great soundtracks, if you're intersested in picking up the first one also.

Being a guitarist myself, I can say that having some prior experience with guitars may help those who are new to the game, but it's important to realise that Guitar Hero bares very little resemblance to the actual thing. That being said, Guitar Hero cannot actually "teach" a person how to play guitar, but it may appeal to non-guitarist and encourage them to pursue lessons.

Also, I must agree with one of the earlier comments. Guitar Hero + Booze = Totally a winning combo! Wink

I've been playing guitar for years, my thoughts on GH are this: why would I want to play a game of playing guitar when I can actually play a real guitar and play the same songs on GH??

I don't think being a guitarist would really matter with providing a subjective answer. I mean as a pool player I got a few pool games on my cell phone. Was it like playing pool? Some are close but not really like playing a real pool game. Still, it can be a ton of fun, especially when bored.

I play on the train so if it can make my hour long commute go faster...great!

Part of the biggest draw to the game is the feeling it gives non-musicians as if they're actually playing their favorite songs on stage in front of an audience, without having to realize any sort of success, whether it be in talent for the instrument or getting into a band to play a gig.

If you know that rush, I'm not sure that you can get so much out of it, even if you are challenged by the 6 buttons.

I went the opposite way though. I got pretty damned good at GH/GH2 that I decided to pick up the real thing. I'm nowhere near as good, obviously, because the two have little in common, but it was a good leaping point.

I guess the game can’t be all bad if it’s at least inspiring people to actually pick up a real guitar and learn.

As a guitarist, and having worked with many other guitarists, I have observed that we are snobby bunch that tend to be competitive when it comes to anything guitar related.

this is a great question and you're not the only one to have asked this question. the wall street journal had a whole article on it, as did several other news sources. and there is a really lively discussion going on about it on my board i guess general consensus is that even though kids aren't really learning to play by playing this game, it's inspiring them to go learn for real...

well I'll come back to this and eat some crow. The wifey wanted GH3 and we got it, I'm converted although it was a bit of a curve...you know thinking 'play the song on the guitar mode' and the reality of playing the game.

For sure different, but alot of fun - I do love it when I'm wrong.....of course I sucked pretty damn hard for a period of undisclosed time.

I've only played Guitar Hero a little bit, and I agree that it has nothing to do with real guitar. It's DDR or PaRappa with a cool controller, and I don't mean that in a derogatory way. What disappoints me about the games is the incredibly limited and poor song selection, and that's the reason I've never bought Guitar Hero (or Rock Band, for that matter). I dunno; while I have no problem dancing to cheesy Euro music in DDR I have absolutely zero interest in playing Guitar Hero to music I don't know or like. Some of the song choices I've seen in these games are just mind boggling. On the other hand, as has been mentioned Guitar Hero is very fun while drinking with friends. It's great when you get a song you can easily play and sing along with at the same time. But too many of the tunes are rather dull.

Coming from the other side (inexperienced guitar player) GH series helps alot with speed and accuracy of your fingers. It has actually inspired me to pick up the guitar again because my downfall before was how slow my fingers moved. I play GH on expert and actually beat all settings on GH2, i think its good for newer guitarists to practice timings and accuracy. For all the people I know that are experienced guitarists, they have fun with it and actually started out on the hard setting. I recommend at least trying it out.
