Mine are 1. Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2. Resident Evil 4 (yeah - it's that good) 3. Resident Evil (gamecube version superior) 4. Doom 5. Chrono Trigger (my god I wish it would come out on the GBA SP already)
I'll limit myself. Some that do deserve mention as being great are: Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Doom 64 (I'm probabaly the only human to like this game)
What criteria do you use to deem as game as an all time favorite?
1. Super Metroid (SNES): I've beat it 8 times. My best is achieving 100% in 2 hours, 37 minutes. I found 2 different ways to get powerbombs before you're supposed to.
2. Street Fighter II Turbo (SNES): The hours I spent mastering the dragon punch and those 2-in-1 combos (and this game still has the best combo system of any game ever IMO.) This game put more blisters on my thumbs than any other. I remember playing with bandaids...
3. Doom (SNES): Beating Hell on the hardest difficulty. I remember that there isn't enough ammo to kill all the baddies on some levels (you start with just a pistol), so I had to run around and rig it where they would shoot each other in the back, so I still get 100% kills.
4. Mortal Kombat III: I don't remember the button string, but I bet I could pick up a controller and pull of Kabal's 7 hit 45% damage combo first try...it's permanently programed into my thumbs.
Not saying these were the best games by any means, but that was back when I only had a SNES and didn't have the money to buy a new game very often. I got my money's worth out of these games.
I quit playing from 1996 to 2004, so I missed out the PS1 and N64.
I feel myself a kind of noob because i don't have any experience from consoles like NES, SNES, etc.
But, the list might be something like this:
1) Metal Gear Solid (PSX) - When this came out (was it 1998?), graphics, story and music were something special. In fact the story with excellent boss matches is still on of he best I've seen. 2) Half-Life (PC) - Revolutionary masterpiece wich remodeld FPS-games. 3) Can't decide.
Let's check it again when I get MGS3.

Starcraft - Good story, great balance, and some of the best online multiplayer fun since... ever.
Skies of Arcadia - For me, it's often the intangibles that draw me to a game. SoA, on the outside, isn't very special, but it's got something about it that kept me happy when I was playing it, and nothing I've done in gaming matches the feeling of having your own pirate base.
Red Alert - Though, come to think of it, I haven't played all that many RTS games, I love the ones I have, and Red Alert is special. This game features some of the most outright enjoyable single player missions I've ever played, and the story is good fun.
I'm also partial to Final Fantasies VII and X.
I reserve the right to be entirely wrong.

I know I mentioned it in the PS2 forum but Final Fantasy VII is hands down the greatest game of all time. Well in my opinion at least. To make this different I'll list some others. Grim Fandango is a great game and if you're not familiar with it or Tim Schaefer's work you must play it. Starcraft, which I know most people have played. And of course The Sonic the Hedgehog series. I'm sure there's a few I can't think of right now...
Mine are: Deus Ex, World of Warcraft, GTA (3, Vice City and San Andreas), Baulders Gate 1 and 2 on the PS2, Far Cry..... the list goes on. But my Clear winner is Deus Ex.
1. Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1) 2. Suikoden II (PS1) 3. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1) 4. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) 5. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES/SNES/GBA)

My favorite of all time is Dungeons and Dragons on the Intelevision system. After that:
Kid Icarus - NES Legend of Zelda - NES Rygar - NES Mario 2 - NES RBI Baseball - NES
These are my favorites mainly because they're a part of my childhood. I like new games, too, but they don't have much meaning beyond themselves like these do.

I have a friend who keeps raving about the new Zatch Bell game (www.zatch-bell.com)--but I haven't been over to play it yet. Anyone played it? I've really gotten into the show, so i'm really anxious to see what it's like. I think my favortite game ever is probably the original Castlevania for Nintendo -- it's the first one that I ever disappeared for hours in. and now i hear they're making a movie!
Hmm...it's hard for me to mentally compare NES/SNES action games to RPGs. Those are the two types of games I like, but I never play them at the same time. I get on NES platform jags, and I get on RPG jags. So, I'll list them both separately.
Best RPGs (NOT in order): Final Fantasy Tactics (Though, this is #1) Tales of Eternia, Symphonia Star Ocean 1, 2, 3 Xenogears Valkyrie Profile Final Fantasy 4, 5 Growlanser Generations Lufia 1, 2
Best NES/SNES/Genesis platformers Super Metroid . . . (And the DISTANT seconds..) Zelda 1, 2, 3 Mario 2j, 3 Ninja Gaiden 1, 2, 3 Castlevania 1, 3 Megaman 1, 2, 3 Sonic 1, 2, 3
